Haryana reports biggest single-day jump of 2,294 fresh cases

Haryana reported the biggest single-day jump of 2,294 fresh COVID-19 infections and 28 deaths, taking the state's case count to 83,353 and toll to 882, according to the health department's daily bulletin.

Haryana's previous record single-day spike of 2,289 cases and 25 deaths were reported on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on phone today with King of Saudi Arabia Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. 

The two leaders exchanged views on the global challenges in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The PM also appreciated the leadership provided by Saudi Arabia during its ongoing Presidency of G20 grouping. They agreed that initiatives taken at the level of G20 had helped in promoting a coordinated response to COVID.

5 states contribute 60% of total COVID cases

India reported 89,706 new cases and 60 per cent of which were reported from five states only, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With 1,115 more deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 73,890. The total cases in the country stands at 43,70,129 including 8,97,394 active cases, 33,98,845 cured/discharged/migrated. Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with more than 2,40,000 followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh with more than 96,000 each.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu contribute 61 per cent of the total active cases.

DCGI sends show cause notice to Serum Institute for not pausing vaccine trial

The Drugs Regulator General of India (DCGI) has issued a show-cause notice to pharma giant Serum Institute of India (SII) asking for an explanation as to why the ongoing clinical trial of Covishield vaccine candidate has not been suspended till doubts about patient safety are cleared.

The drug regulator's move comes after AstraZeneca, which is developing the vaccine candidate against COVID-19 with researchers of Oxford University, paused its trial as a volunteer developed an unexplained illness. The clinical trial has been put on hold across countries where it was being conducted - USA, UK, Brazil and South Africa.

Referring to reports of AstraZeneca halting the trials in the UK, Serum Institute of India (SII), which is conducting the trials in India, said the UK trials have been paused for further review.

Telangana to monitor fees of private hospitals 

The Telangana government would appoint a task force committee to monitor the fees being charged by private hospitals for COVID-19 treatment, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said today. 

He assured members that tough action would be taken against those hospitals trying to fleece patients.

West Bengal reported 3,107 new cases and 53 deaths today and at least 2,967 were discharged.

SC seeks centre's reply on plea for opening of religious places

The Supreme Court asked the Centre to respond to a plea seeking opening of all religious places for worship across the country which have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde issued the notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the plea of Ahmedabad-based "Gitarth Ganga Trust'' seeking opening of the places of worship in the country.

AP records 10,418 COVID-19 cases,infection count over 5.2 lakh

Amaravati: The Coronavirus graph of Andhra Pradesh continued its progression on a steep incline and reached 5,27,512 today as 10,418 fresh cases were added.

The latest bulletin said 9,842 patients had recovered in 24 hours ending 9 am on Wednesday, while 74 more succumbed to the pandemic in the state.

The number of active cases in the state rose to 97,271 after a total of 4,25,607 patients recovered and 4,634 died.

66 COVID-19 deaths, 6,711 new cases in UP

Lucknow: Sixty-six more people died of COVID-19 in Uttar Pradesh, pushing the death toll to 4,112, while 6,711 fresh cases took the state's infection tally to 2,85,041, according to an official bulletin.

The total number of active coronavirus cases in the state now stands at 64,028, it said.

Of the new cases reported, 869 were in Lucknow, 473 in Kanpur and 459 in Prayagraj, the bulletin said.

Jharkhand reports 2,652 new COVID-19 cases, 19 fresh fatalities

Ranchi: Jharkhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 55,296 on Wednesday as 2,652 more people tested positive for the infection, while 19 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 503, a health bulletin said.

East Singhbhum district reported the highest number of new cases at 475, followed by Bokaro (335), Koderma (294), Saraikela (248) and Ranchi and Hazaribagh (210 each), it said.

Financial situation in Puducherry 'very critical': CM

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said that the fiscal situation of the territorial government was 'very critical' as the flow of revenue had fallen considerably during the ongoing COVID-19 period. 

He flayed the Centre for being 'irresponsive' to the repeated pleas of his government to sanction funds. 

Addressing a virtual press conference, he said, "We cannot raise the taxes although we are managing the expenditure from out of the state government's funds and also by utilising the COVID-19 Fund and Disaster Management Fund." 

The Chief Minister pointed out that Rs 700 crores were due from the Centre for the last five months under compensation for implementing the GST here.

Prescription not needed for testing: Delhi Govt

"It has been decided that there will be no requirement of a prescription from a qualified medical practitioner for COVID-19 testing in Delhi. However, tests will be conducted in accordance with the advisory issued by ICMR and as per orders issued by the Delhi government from time to time," says Delhi government.

UP CM calls for increased contact tracing

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath called for increasing contact tracing of coronavirus patients in Lucknow, Kanpur and Allahabad. 

According to the health department, the state reported 6,743 cases on Tuesday, out of which, 887 cases were found in Lucknow, 431 in Kanpur Nagar, 306 cases in Allahabad, among other places.

Tripura reports 582 new COVID-19 cases, 9 fresh fatalities

Agartala: As many as 582 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura today, pushing the state's tally to 16,739, a health official said.

Tripura's coronavirus death toll rose to 161 as nine more people succumbed to the infection, he said.

West Tripura district, under which Agartala falls, accounted for 85 of the 161 COVID-19 deaths reported in the state so far.

The state now has 6,903 active cases, while 9,653 people have recovered from the disease so far and 22 patients have migrated to other states, the official said.

One more COVID-19 death in Himachal; case tally at 7,881

Shimla: One more person died of coronavirus in Himachal Pradesh today, taking the death toll to 60, while 49 fresh cases pushed the state's infection tally to 7,881.

According to health department data, the fatality was reported from Sirmaur.

Solan accounts for 15 of the total COVID-19 deaths in the state, followed by 11 in Kangra, eight in Mandi, seven in Shimla, five each in Hamirpur, Chamba and Una, and four in Sirmaur.

The number of active cases in the state stood at 2,300, Special Secretary (Health) Nipun Jindal said.

India's cumulative testing crosses 5.18cr; over 33.95k recoveries so far

Over 11.54 lakh COVID-19 tests were conducted in a span of 24 hours taking India's cumulative tests to over5.18 crore so far, while during the same period nearly 75,000 people have recuperated from the disease taking the total number of recoveries to 33,98,844 in the country, the Centre said today.

Timely diagnosis through higher levels of countrywide testing has furnished valuable opportunities to isolate or hospitalize the positive cases adequately in advance for appropriate treatment. This, in turn, has facilitated lower mortality rates (1.69 per centas on date) and speedy recovery, the Union Health Ministry underlined.

33 new cases push COVID-19 tally of Andamans to 3,392

Port Blair: Thirty-three more people have tested positive in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, taking the tally in the union territory to 3,392.

Three new patients have travel history, while 30 fresh cases were detected during contact tracing, an official said.

At least 38 people were cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recoveries to 3,035.

At present, there are 307 active cases in the archipelago, while 50 people have died of the infection, the official added.

Haryana education minister Kanwar Pal said today that he has tested positive for coronavirus. He requested all those who might have come in his contact during the past few days to isolate themselves and get their tests done.

"After some symptoms, I got my COVID test done and it returned positive. I request all those who might have come in my contact to isolate themselves and get their tests done, the minister tweeted.

The minister's aide said that Kanwar Pal's report came positive in the morning and he was currently in Chandigarh.

Rajasthan records seven fresh fatalities

Rajasthan recorded seven more fatalities due to the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the COVID-19 death toll in the state to 1,171, according to a health department bulletin.

The state also reported 728 new cases taking the total number of infected people to 94,854.

In Jaipur, the death toll from the coronavirus infection is 292 followed by 113 in Jodhpur, 85 in Bikaner, 83 in Kota, 79 in Ajmer and 73 in Bharatpur, 47 in Pali, 44 in Nagaur, 31 in Udaipur, 30 in Alwar, 23 in Barmer and 22 in Dholpur.

Five women and as many men succumbed to COVID-19 in Puducherry on Wednesday while 341 more people contracted the virus, pushing the tally of infections to 18,084.

Plasma therapy not beneficial in reducing mortality: ICMR Study

Use of convalescent plasma therapy in coronavirus-infected patients does not help in reducing mortality or progression to severe COVID-19, a multi-centric study funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has found.

The 'open-label parallel-arm phase II multicentre randomized controlled trial' (PLACID Trial) was conducted across 39 public and private hospitals across India between April 22 and July 14 to find effectiveness of convalescent plasma (CP) for the treatment of COVID-19, it said.

Telangana records 2,479 new cases, 10 deaths

Telangana continued to witness a surge in coronavirus caseload with 2,479 fresh infections and 10 more deaths, taking the aggregate in the state to 1.47lakh.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 322, followed by Rangareddy 188, Medchal Malkajgiri 183 and Warangal Urban 124 districts, a government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 9.

2,579 cases reported in Assam

As many as 2,579 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Assam on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases to 1,30,823 in the state. 

The total number of cases includes 99,073 recoveries, 378 deaths, and 31,369 active cases, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. India's COVID-19 count went to 42,80,423 after the report of 75,809 new cases.

New Delhi: India's COVID-19 case tally has crossed the 43-lakh mark with a spike of 89,706 new cases and 1,115 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Wednesday. 

The total case tally stands at 43,70,129 including 8,97,394 active cases, 33,98,845 cured/discharged/migrated and 73,890 deaths," the Ministry added. 

Five states -- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu -- account for nearly 70 per cent of deaths due to COVID-19 in the country, Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. 

Maharashtra accounts for 27 per cent of the total active cases, Andhra Pradesh 11 per cent, Karnataka 10.98 per cent, Uttar Pradesh about seven per cent, and Tamil Nadu around six per cent. 

"A total of 5,18,04,677 samples tested up to September 8, 2020. Of these, 11,54,549 samples were tested yesterday," the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

Haryana education minister tests positive

Haryana education minister Kanwar Pal said today that he has tested positive for coronavirus. He requested all those who might have come in his contact during the past few days to isolate themselves and get their tests done.

"After some symptoms, I got my COVID test done and it returned positive. I request all those who might have come in my contact to isolate themselves and get their tests done, the minister tweeted.

The minister's aide said that Kanwar Pal's report came positive in the morning and he was currently in Chandigarh.

Rajasthan records seven fresh fatalities

Rajasthan recorded seven more fatalities due to the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the COVID-19 death toll in the state to 1,171, according to a health department bulletin.

The state also reported 728 new cases taking the total number of infected people to 94,854.

In Jaipur, the death toll from the coronavirus infection is 292 followed by 113 in Jodhpur, 85 in Bikaner, 83 in Kota, 79 in Ajmer and 73 in Bharatpur, 47 in Pali, 44 in Nagaur, 31 in Udaipur, 30 in Alwar, 23 in Barmer and 22 in Dholpur.

10 more die of coronavirus in Puducherry, toll mounts to 347

Five women and as many men succumbed to COVID-19 in Puducherry on Wednesday while 341 more people contracted the virus, pushing the tally of infections to 18,084.

A release from Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said 341 new cases were reported at the end of testing of 2,560.

Plasma therapy not beneficial in reducing mortality: ICMR Study

Use of convalescent plasma therapy in coronavirus-infected patients does not help in reducing mortality or progression to severe COVID-19, a multi-centric study funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has found.

The 'open-label parallel-arm phase II multicentre randomized controlled trial' (PLACID Trial) was conducted across 39 public and private hospitals across India between April 22 and July 14 to find effectiveness of convalescent plasma (CP) for the treatment of COVID-19, it said.

Telangana records 2,479 new cases, 10 deaths

Telangana continued to witness a surge in coronavirus caseload with 2,479 fresh infections and 10 more deaths, taking the aggregate in the state to 1.47lakh.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 322, followed by Rangareddy 188, Medchal Malkajgiri 183 and Warangal Urban 124 districts, a government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 9.

2,579 cases reported in Assam

As many as 2,579 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Assam on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases to 1,30,823 in the state. 

The total number of cases includes 99,073 recoveries, 378 deaths, and 31,369 active cases, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. India's COVID-19 count went to 42,80,423 after the report of 75,809 new cases.

New Delhi: India's COVID-19 case tally has crossed the 43-lakh mark with a spike of 89,706 new cases and 1,115 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Wednesday. 

The total case tally stands at 43,70,129 including 8,97,394 active cases, 33,98,845 cured/discharged/migrated and 73,890 deaths," the Ministry added. 

Five states -- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu -- account for nearly 70 per cent of deaths due to COVID-19 in the country, Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. 

Maharashtra accounts for 27 per cent of the total active cases, Andhra Pradesh 11 per cent, Karnataka 10.98 per cent, Uttar Pradesh about seven per cent, and Tamil Nadu around six per cent. 

"A total of 5,18,04,677 samples tested up to September 8, 2020. Of these, 11,54,549 samples were tested yesterday," the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.
