COVID-19: Maharashtra adds 7,975 new cases; 233 more die

Mumbai: Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 2,75,640 on Wednesday with the addition of 7,975 new cases, while the death toll inched towards the 11,000-mark, the health department said.

With 233 new deaths in a day, the state's fatality count increased to 10,928, the department said.

A total of 3,606 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the number of recovered persons to 1,52,613 the department said in a statement.

There are 1,11,801 active cases in the state at present, it added.

Kerala: 623 virus cases push tally past 9,500 with one death

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala, which is in the third phase of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, witnessed the highest single-day surge of 623 on Wednesday.

The total infection tally crossed the 9,500-mark and the death toll climbed to 35 with a woman succumbing to the virus in Idukki.

This is the second consecutive day that the daily spike has crossed 600.

On Tuesday, 608 cases were reported. The infection through contact rose to 432 on Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik inaugurates PLASMA BANK for treatment of COVID19 patients

Cuttack: Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik today inaugurated the COVID Plasma Bank for treatment of serious COVID patients at SCB Medical College, Cuttack.  

With this, Odisha joins a select club of very few states who have introduced Convalescent Plasma Therapy for the treatment of serious COVID patients. Odisha is the third state besides Delhi and Maharastra to start this procedure.

Punjab's COVID19 case tally rises to 8799 with 288 new positive cases reported

Punjab Health authorities on Wednesday reported eight more coronavirus fatalities as 288 fresh infections surfaced, pushing the numbers to 221 deaths and 8,799 cases. 

Three deaths each were reported in Amritsar and Jalandhar while one each took place in Ludhiana and Pathankot, a medical bulletin said.

Dharavi reports 23 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday; tally climbs to 2,415

Dharavi, one of the most affected COVID-19 areas in Mumbai, reported 23 new positive cases on Wednesday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases to 2,415. Including 99 active cases. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received 446 ventilators from Central govt till date, financed through PM CARES Fund. "These ventilators were not received at once but in phases. We arranged their assembling & installation in various COVID centres of BMC hospitals," a BMC official said.

6 new COVID-19 cases in Nagaland, tally rises to 902

Kohima: Nagaland on Wednesday reported six new COVID-19 cases, taking the state''s tally to 902, Health and Family Welfare minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

Of the total 902 COVID-19 cases, 554 are active as 348 people have recovered from the disease.

"Out of 170 samples tested, 6 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Dimapur," the minister tweeted.

He also said that two COVID-19 patients - one each from Kohima and Dimapur districts have recovered on Wednesday.

Dimapur district has reported 327 COVID-19 cases followed Peren (236), Kohima (182), Mon (83), Tuensang (44), Phek (17), Zunheboto (5), Mokokchung (5), Longleng (2) and Wokha (1).

India’s Covid-19 recovery rate climbs to 63.24%  

New Delhi: India’s Covid-19 recovery rate has jumped to 63.24% across the country logging a recovery rate higher than that of the national average, the Centre said on Wednesday.  

The last 24 hours have seen a sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 patients recovering and 20,572 people were cured which has taken the total number of recovered cases among COVID-19 patients to 5,92,031, health ministry data indicated.

Mamata promises jobs to kin of WB govt employees who died due to COVID-19

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said her government will provide jobs to the family members of state employees who died while leading the fight against COVID-19. At least 12 state government employees have died due to coronavirus infection, she said.

Banerjee said that the state government will also honour the deceased employees - doctors, policemen and health workers- with medals and certificates.

Karnataka makes it mandatory for pvt hospitals to display bed allocation boards

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government ordered on Wednesday that those hospitals registered under KPME in Karnataka should display details related to beds for COVID-19 patients at the reception centre. The display board should be arranged by tomorrow.

"It is made mandatory that all hospitals registered under KPME (Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act) in Karnataka State should display at the reception counter, a bed allocation display board," the notification signed by Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar said.

It said the board should display details like- name of the hospital, total number of beds (as per KPME registration), total number of beds allocated for COVID-19 patients referred by BBMP (Bengaluru civic body- Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), among others.  

Stating that the data must corroborate with the data of the central bed allocation system of BBMP, the notification said the display board should be arranged by July 16 and non-compliance to the order will attract punishment under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act 2005 and Indian Penal Code.

Earlier, in the notification issued by the state government dated June 23, it was mandated to reserve 50 per cent of the beds in private hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients referred by public health authorities.  

However, some patients are finding it difficult to get beds even after the allocation has been made by the BBMP's central allocation system and this is causing a lot of hardship to patients, according to the notification issued on Wednesday.

19 BSF personnel test COVID-19 positive in Meghalaya; state tally at 337

Shillong: Nineteen BSF personnel tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Wednesday, taking the northeastern state''s tally to 337, officials said.

The fresh infections have taken the number of active cases in the state to 289, of which 205 are Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The remaining 84 COVID-19 patients are civilians, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.

A total of 46 people have recovered and two patients have died so far, he said.

BSF personnel now account for 71 per cent of the total active cases in the state, a senior health official said.

The two-day lockdown imposed in state capital Shillong on Monday ended at 6 am on Wednesday as a contact tracing exercise in certain localities has been completed, the official said.

The exercise was launched after 10 of the 41 people who had attended a wedding in Guwahati on June 27 tested positive for COVID-19.

A total of 200 primary contacts of the patients have been identified and isolated, he said.

The administration has also registered a case against the 41 people who attended the wedding, violating the COVID-19 protocol.

Each one of them has to pay Rs 2,000 per day as fees for institutional quarantine for 14 days, the official added.

Coimbatore Collector tests COVID-19 positive; hospitalised

Coimbatore: District collector K Rajamani tested positive for COVID-19 and got admitted to a private hospital here on Wednesday, official sources said.

Rajamani had a mild fever and throat pain, so he took a test at the hospital late Tuesday. The result confirmed that he was infected with the virus, they said.

However, he went home and was back at the hospital this morning. By then, the fever and pain subsided, the sources said.

He was exhausted visiting the containment zones to check the arrangements made to prevent further spread of the virus.

That could have caused the infection, sources in the hospital said.

Rajamani's family members and others working with him have been asked to self-quarantine.

New Delhi: Distinguished footballer and Dhyan Chand Awardee Syed Shahid Hakim has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently undergoing treatment at a quarantine centre in Hyderabad.

The 81-year-old Hakim, who was a part of India's 1960 Rome Olympic squad, confirmed the development on Wednesday.

"Yes, I have tested positive for COVID-19 six days back and I am currently at a hotel in Hyderabad which has been converted into a quarantine centre by the state government," Hakim said.

Jammu and Kashmir: 346 test positive, tally crosses 11,000

A total of 346 people tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as the number of Covid-19 cases crossed 11,000 in the Union Territory, officials said.

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said of 346 tested positive on Tuesday, 56 are in Jammu division while 290 are in Kashmir division as the total number of Covid-19 infected people jumped to 11,173 in J&K.

Eight patients succumbed to the dreaded virus on Tuesday in different hospitals. So far, 195 people have been killed by the dreaded virus in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides, 6,223 patients have completely recovered.

The number of active cases is now 4,755 in J&K out of which 816 are in Jammu division and 3,939 in Kashmir division, officials said.

India records highest single-day spike of 29,429 cases

India recorded the highest single-day spike of 29,429 coronavirus cases and 582 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 9,36,181 cases with a death total of 24,309, the Health Ministry's data stated on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the country had crossed the grim nine lakh mark, adding over a lakh case within three days. India had crossed the eight lakh cases on July 11.

According to Health Ministry data, as many as 5,92,031 patients have recovered, almost twice the number of active patients at 3,19,840. The rate of recovery has touched 63.02 per cent. India, however, remains the third worst-affected country after the US and Brazil.

During the last 24 hours, 3,20,161 samples were tested, as the testing lab network continues to expand. As on date, more than 1,206 labs have enabled people to undergo coronavirus tests.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state, with 2,67,665 cases and 10,695 casualties followed by Tamil Nadu with total 1,47,324 cases, including 2,099 deaths.

With 1,606 new coronavirus cases and 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, the national capital recorded a total tally of 1,15,346 cases and 3,446 deaths.

States with more than 10,000 cases included Gujarat (43,637, Uttar Pradesh (39,724), Rajasthan (25,571), Madhya Pradesh (19,005), West Bengal (32,838), Haryana (22,628), Karnataka (44,077), Andhra Pradesh (33,019), Telangana (37,745), Assam (17,807), and Bihar (19,824).

On the global front, the overall number of global COVID-19 cases has increased to more than 13.2 million, while the deaths have soared to over 5,77,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

4,526 new cases in Tamil Nadu, 4,743 discharged

Tamil Nadu on Tuesday registered 4,526 new coronavirus cases while the number of such patients cured and discharged from various hospitals totalled 4,743, the Health Department said.

With new cases, the southern state's total tally is 147,324, including 97,310 cured persons. There are now 47,912 active cases in Tamil Nadu.

A total of 67 more COVID-19 deaths in the last 24-hour cycle took the state's death toll to 2,099.

The number of infected children in the state in the age group 0-12 went up to 7,304.

The state capital Chennai continued to head the Covid-19 infection table with 1,078 new cases and a total tally of 79,662. Active cases in the city total 15,814, with 1,858 patients discharged in Chennai on Tuesday.

Another Odisha MLA tests positive 

Sudhanshu Shekhar Parida, a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA from Remuna constituency in Balasore district of Odisha, has tested positive for COVID-19, an official said on Tuesday.

The legislator informed that his swab was collected on July 11 and the report has come out positive on Tuesday.

He will be admitted to a COVID hospital. The contact tracing of the MLA has already begun, the official said.

Parida was under home quarantine after coming in contact with Niligiri MLA Sukanta Nayak, who had earlier tested positive for the virus.

Parida is the third legislator from the state to have contracted the virus.

Earlier, the MLAs from Niligiri in Balasore and Salepur in Cuttack tested positive for coronavirus.

Gujarat sees another high of cases, tally crosses 43K

Gujarat recorded a new high of 915 Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking its tally to 43,723, while the death toll reached 2,071 with 14 more succumbing to the virus.

Just within the first two weeks of July, Gujarat has witnessed over 11,000 cases, with a new high almost every day.

Surat, the state's new coronavirus hotspot, is also seeing a rising count every passing day. It saw 291 new cases on Tuesday, way ahead of former hotspot, Ahmedabad, which had 167.

Vadodara was at third spot with 76, Bhavnagar had 45, Surendranagar 31, Bharuch 28, Gandhinagar 26, Junagadh 25, Rajkot 24, Banaskantha and Mehsana 21 each, Dahod 19, Jamnagar 18, Kheda 15, Valsad 14, Anand and Navsari 10 each, Mahisagar and Patan nine each, Panchmahals and Sabarkantha eight each, Gir-Somnath, Kutch and Tapi seven each, Morbi five, Narmada four, Chhota Udaipur three, Amreli, Botad and Porbandar two each and one in Aravali.

Of Tuesday's deaths, five were reported from Surat, three each from Ahmedabad and Vadodara and one each from Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar and Banaskantha.

Ahmedabad leads the toll with 1,530, followed way behind by Surat with 228, Vadodara with 56 in Vadodara. There have been 35 deaths in Gandhinagar, 24 in Aravalli, 19 in Patan, 16 in Panchmahals, 15 each in Rajkot and Banaskantha, 14 each in Mehsana, Bhavnagar and Kheda, 13 in Anand and 11 in Bharuch.

Gujarat's mortality rate is 4.73 per cent, which has come down a bit, but is still among the highest in the country.

On Tuesday, the health authorities carried out 8,102 RT-PCR tests, taking the total number to 4,78,367 RT-PCR tests.

A total of 749 patients were discharged on Tuesday, taking the cumulative number to 30,555.

The state had 11,097 active cases, out of which 71 critical patients are on ventilator and the rest are stable.

There are currently 3,39,412 people quarantined - 3,36,843 at home and 2,569 in government facilities.

Maharashtra notches 213 deaths, Mumbai cases fall below 1K

Maharashtra notched 213 Covid-19 deaths on Tuesday while Mumbai's tally of fresh cases fell below the 1,000-mark, providing some relief, health officials said here.

Tuesday's tally of new cases at 6,741 was down from a peak of 8,139 (July 11) but increased by 244 compared to Monday's 6,497.

The number of fatalities in the state again went above the 200-mark from the July lowest of 125 to 213 on Tuesday, though considerably lower than the previous record toll of 295 notched on July 4.

With the fresh fatalities, the state's death toll went up to 10,695 while the total cases touched 267,665, both highest in the country.

According to Tuesday's figures, one death was recorded in roughly every 7 minutes and a staggering 281 new cases every hour in the state.

The recovery rate in the western state increased marginally from 55.38 per cent a day earlier to 55.67 per cent on Tuesday, while the mortality (death) rate stood at 4 per cent.

The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 107,665 are active cases, which is lower vis-a-vis the number of patients cured, indicating a positive sign.

On the positive side, 4,500 cured patients returned home on Tuesday, taking the total number discharges to 149,007, considerably higher than the 107,665 active cases in the state.

In the most cheerful news, a 100-year retired schoolteacher, Arjun G. Naringrekar, taught a ‘lesson' to coronavirus and returned home to Kandivali suburb after celebrating his birthday with doctors, nurses and other care-givers outside the BMC's HinduHridaySamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Hospital in Jogeshwari on Tuesday evening.

Of the 213 fatalities, Mumbai alone accounted for 70 deaths, taking the city's toll to 5,405, while the number of corona cases increased touched 95,100 on Tuesday.

Besides, Thane recorded 64 fatalities, followed Pune (25), Palghar and Jalgaon (8 each), Nashik and Solapur (6 each), Ahmednagar and Aurangabad (4 each), Raigad and Nanded (3 each), Ratnagiri, Latur and Parbhani (2 each), and Satara, Sangli, Akola, Buldhana, Bhandara and Nagpur (1 each).

The MMR (Thane Division) remains on the edge as deaths spiral and cases pile up, with the current toll at 7,543 and a staggering 2,893 new patients, pushing up the number of cases to 179,760 on Tuesday.

Thane cases have touched 65,324 with 1,769 fatalities to emerge as the second worst-hit district after Mumbai in the state.

Pune district continues to zoom ahead by notching 42,092 cases, with the death toll increasing from 1,127 a day earlier to 1,152 on Tuesday.

The Pune Division's (comprising Pune, Solapur and Satara districts) death toll reached 1,578 with 48,425 patients but remains far behind MMR and Thane district.

The next major region of concern is Nashik Division with 782 fatalities and 16,890 positive cases, followed by Aurangabad Division with 401 deaths and 10,314 cases, and Akola Division with 168 fatalities and 3,958 cases.

Next on the list is Kolhapur Division, which has notched 76 deaths and 3,148 patients, Latur Division had 86 fatalities and 2,048 cases, and Nagpur Division recorded 30 deaths and 2,912 cases.

All the eight divisions in the state recorded fatalities on Tuesday, but only Chandrapur (out of total 36) remains a zero COVID death district, though all have notched fresh cases.

Meanwhile, the number of people sent to home quarantine increased from 687,353 earlier to 698,854 now, while those in institutional quarantine went up from 41,660 to 42,350 on Tuesday.

Karnataka reports record 87 deaths, tally reaches 44,077

A record number of 87 COVID patients succumbed to the virus in Karnataka, while 2,496 new cases raised the state's tally to 44,077, an official said on Tuesday.

"New COVID deaths 87," said a health official about the fatalities recorded across the state in the past 24 hours. Following the highest single-day COVID deaths, the state's death toll rose to 842.

As many as 56 of the 87 deaths occurred in Bengaluru alone, as cough, fever and breathlessness continued to be the most common symptoms.

Meanwhile, 2,496 cases were reported in the state with Bengaluru leading the chart with 1,267 cases.

With the addition of new cases, the city's COVID tally breached the 20,000-mark at 20,969, out of which 15,599 are active cases. Bengaluru alone accounts for 60 per cent of all the active cases in the state.

Among the new cases on Tuesday, excluding Bengaluru, Mysuru accounted for 125 infections, followed by Kalaburagi (121), Dharwad (100), Ballari (99), Koppal (98) and Dakshina Kannada (91), among others.

On a positive note, 1,142 patients were discharged on Tuesday, 664 in Bengaluru Urban alone, raising the total number of discharges to 17,390. Likewise, cases in ICU marginally fell by five to 540.

Of the total 44,077 cases, active cases amount to 25,839 in Karnataka.

Amid rising cases in the southern state, the government has mandated that all those who gave their swab samples for testing may be infectious and advised abundant caution.

"Persons who have provided swab samples for COVID testing may be infectious. Hence, as a matter of abundant caution, all such persons shall be advised strict isolation or quarantine," said Additional Chief Secretary Jawaid Akhtar.

Akhtar said such people should be isolated until their results are communicated.

Telangana reports 1,524 new cases, 10 deaths

A total of 1,524 COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths were reported in Telangana on Tuesday, said the state's health department.

The state's total COVID-19 cases now stand at 37,745, including 12,531 active cases and 24,840 recoveries. The deadly virus has so far claimed 375 lives in the State.

A total of 1,95,024 samples were tested in the State including 13,175 on Tuesday, said the state's health department.

As many as 9,06,752 cases have been confirmed in India, out of which 5,71,460 have recovered. A total of 23,727 patients have lost their lives due to the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry.

93 new cases reported in Madhya Pradesh's Indore

Indore on Tuesday reported 93 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of novel coronavirus cases in the district to 5,496, said Office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in a bulletin.

As per the bulletin, a total of 46 persons were discharged on Tuesday taking the total number of recovered/discharged patients to 4,074.

There are 1,144 active cases in the district, and 4,825 people are under institutional quarantine.

The death toll touched 278 after 5 deaths were reported on Tuesday including 2 deaths which the district health department termed as 'reconciliation" from the month of April.

As many as 9,06,752 cases have been confirmed in India, out of which 5,71,460 have recovered. A total of 23,727 patients have lost their lives due to the infection, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Odisha recorded its highest 609 recoveries of COVID-19 patients in a single day on Tuesday, taking the total recovered cases in the state to 9,864 against the total 14,280 positive cases reported in the state.

As per the State Health and Family Welfare Department, the recovered 609 cases are from 21 districts -- 268 from Ganjam, 135 from Sundargarh, 37 from Khurdha, 32 from Cuttack, 25 from Balasore, 23 from Keonjhar, 18 from Mayurbhanj, 12 from Bhadrak, 12 from Puri, eight from Sambalpur, seven each from Baragarh and Jagatsinghpur, six from Jajpur, four each from Jharsuguda and Kendrapara, three from Bolangir, two each from Koraput, Nabarangpur and Rayagada, one each from Gajapati and Nayagarh district.

Till the date, Odisha has total 4,320 active cases and 74 persons have died due to the virus.  

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, in a high-level meeting on Tuesday reviewed the management of COVID crisis in the state and directed officials to strengthen monitoring in the focus districts such as Ganjam, Cuttack, Jajpur, Sundargarh and Khurda.

The Odisha Government will initiate Plasma Therapy to treat COVID patients from Wednesday at three dedicated COVID hospitals in the state, the government said in a press release.

Plasma Therapy will be started from today in SUM Hospital, KIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar and Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack. SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack will function as the Nodal Centre for Plasma Therapy.

COVID-19: Maharashtra adds 7,975 new cases; 233 more die

Mumbai: Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally rose to 2,75,640 on Wednesday with the addition of 7,975 new cases, while the death toll inched towards the 11,000-mark, the health department said.

With 233 new deaths in a day, the state's fatality count increased to 10,928, the department said.

A total of 3,606 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the number of recovered persons to 1,52,613 the department said in a statement.

There are 1,11,801 active cases in the state at present, it added.

Kerala: 623 virus cases push tally past 9,500 with one death

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala, which is in the third phase of the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, witnessed the highest single-day surge of 623 on Wednesday.

The total infection tally crossed the 9,500-mark and the death toll climbed to 35 with a woman succumbing to the virus in Idukki.

This is the second consecutive day that the daily spike has crossed 600.

On Tuesday, 608 cases were reported. The infection through contact rose to 432 on Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.

6 new COVID-19 cases in Nagaland, tally rises to 902

Kohima: Nagaland on Wednesday reported six new COVID-19 cases, taking the state''s tally to 902, Health and Family Welfare minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

Of the total 902 COVID-19 cases, 554 are active as 348 people have recovered from the disease.

"Out of 170 samples tested, 6 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Dimapur," the minister tweeted.

He also said that two COVID-19 patients - one each from Kohima and Dimapur districts have recovered on Wednesday.

Dimapur district has reported 327 COVID-19 cases followed Peren (236), Kohima (182), Mon (83), Tuensang (44), Phek (17), Zunheboto (5), Mokokchung (5), Longleng (2) and Wokha (1).

India’s Covid-19 recovery rate climbs to 63.24%  

New Delhi: India’s Covid-19 recovery rate has jumped to 63.24% across the country logging a recovery rate higher than that of the national average, the Centre said on Wednesday.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government ordered on Wednesday that those hospitals registered under KPME in Karnataka should display details related to beds for COVID-19 patients at the reception centre. The display board should be arranged by tomorrow.

"It is made mandatory that all hospitals registered under KPME (Karnataka Private Medical Establishment Act) in Karnataka State should display at the reception counter, a bed allocation display board," the notification signed by Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar said.

It said the board should display details like- name of the hospital, total number of beds (as per KPME registration), total number of beds allocated for COVID-19 patients referred by BBMP (Bengaluru civic body- Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike), among others.  

Stating that the data must corroborate with the data of the central bed allocation system of BBMP, the notification said the display board should be arranged by July 16 and non-compliance to the order will attract punishment under relevant sections of the Disaster Management Act 2005 and Indian Penal Code.

Earlier, in the notification issued by the state government dated June 23, it was mandated to reserve 50 per cent of the beds in private hospitals to treat COVID-19 patients referred by public health authorities.  

However, some patients are finding it difficult to get beds even after the allocation has been made by the BBMP's central allocation system and this is causing a lot of hardship to patients, according to the notification issued on Wednesday.

19 BSF personnel test COVID-19 positive in Meghalaya; state tally at 337

Shillong: Nineteen BSF personnel tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Wednesday, taking the northeastern state''s tally to 337, officials said.

The fresh infections have taken the number of active cases in the state to 289, of which 205 are Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. The remaining 84 COVID-19 patients are civilians, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said.

A total of 46 people have recovered and two patients have died so far, he said.

BSF personnel now account for 71 per cent of the total active cases in the state, a senior health official said.

The two-day lockdown imposed in state capital Shillong on Monday ended at 6 am on Wednesday as a contact tracing exercise in certain localities has been completed, the official said.

The exercise was launched after 10 of the 41 people who had attended a wedding in Guwahati on June 27 tested positive for COVID-19.

A total of 200 primary contacts of the patients have been identified and isolated, he said.

The administration has also registered a case against the 41 people who attended the wedding, violating the COVID-19 protocol.

Each one of them has to pay Rs 2,000 per day as fees for institutional quarantine for 14 days, the official added.

Coimbatore Collector tests COVID-19 positive; hospitalised

Coimbatore: District collector K Rajamani tested positive for COVID-19 and got admitted to a private hospital here on Wednesday, official sources said.

Rajamani had a mild fever and throat pain, so he took a test at the hospital late Tuesday. The result confirmed that he was infected with the virus, they said.

However, he went home and was back at the hospital this morning. By then, the fever and pain subsided, the sources said.

He was exhausted visiting the containment zones to check the arrangements made to prevent further spread of the virus.

That could have caused the infection, sources in the hospital said.

Rajamani's family members and others working with him have been asked to self-quarantine.

Jammu and Kashmir: 346 test positive, tally crosses 11,000

A total of 346 people tested positive for the Novel Coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as the number of Covid-19 cases crossed 11,000 in the Union Territory, officials said.

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said of 346 tested positive on Tuesday, 56 are in Jammu division while 290 are in Kashmir division as the total number of Covid-19 infected people jumped to 11,173 in J&K.

Eight patients succumbed to the dreaded virus on Tuesday in different hospitals. So far, 195 people have been killed by the dreaded virus in Jammu and Kashmir.

Besides, 6,223 patients have completely recovered.

The number of active cases is now 4,755 in J&K out of which 816 are in Jammu division and 3,939 in Kashmir division, officials said.

India records highest single-day spike of 29,429 cases

India recorded the highest single-day spike of 29,429 coronavirus cases and 582 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the tally to 9,36,181 cases with a death total of 24,309, the Health Ministry's data stated on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the country had crossed the grim nine lakh mark, adding over a lakh case within three days. India had crossed the eight lakh cases on July 11.

According to Health Ministry data, as many as 5,92,031 patients have recovered, almost twice the number of active patients at 3,19,840. The rate of recovery has touched 63.02 per cent. India, however, remains the third worst-affected country after the US and Brazil.

During the last 24 hours, 3,20,161 samples were tested, as the testing lab network continues to expand. As on date, more than 1,206 labs have enabled people to undergo coronavirus tests.

Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state, with 2,67,665 cases and 10,695 casualties followed by Tamil Nadu with total 1,47,324 cases, including 2,099 deaths.

With 1,606 new coronavirus cases and 35 deaths in the last 24 hours, the national capital recorded a total tally of 1,15,346 cases and 3,446 deaths.

States with more than 10,000 cases included Gujarat (43,637, Uttar Pradesh (39,724), Rajasthan (25,571), Madhya Pradesh (19,005), West Bengal (32,838), Haryana (22,628), Karnataka (44,077), Andhra Pradesh (33,019), Telangana (37,745), Assam (17,807), and Bihar (19,824).

On the global front, the overall number of global COVID-19 cases has increased to more than 13.2 million, while the deaths have soared to over 5,77,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

4,526 new cases in Tamil Nadu, 4,743 discharged

Tamil Nadu on Tuesday registered 4,526 new coronavirus cases while the number of such patients cured and discharged from various hospitals totalled 4,743, the Health Department said.

With new cases, the southern state's total tally is 147,324, including 97,310 cured persons. There are now 47,912 active cases in Tamil Nadu.

A total of 67 more COVID-19 deaths in the last 24-hour cycle took the state's death toll to 2,099.

The number of infected children in the state in the age group 0-12 went up to 7,304.

The state capital Chennai continued to head the Covid-19 infection table with 1,078 new cases and a total tally of 79,662. Active cases in the city total 15,814, with 1,858 patients discharged in Chennai on Tuesday.

Another Odisha MLA tests positive 

Sudhanshu Shekhar Parida, a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA from Remuna constituency in Balasore district of Odisha, has tested positive for COVID-19, an official said on Tuesday.

The legislator informed that his swab was collected on July 11 and the report has come out positive on Tuesday.

He will be admitted to a COVID hospital. The contact tracing of the MLA has already begun, the official said.

Parida was under home quarantine after coming in contact with Niligiri MLA Sukanta Nayak, who had earlier tested positive for the virus.

Parida is the third legislator from the state to have contracted the virus.

Earlier, the MLAs from Niligiri in Balasore and Salepur in Cuttack tested positive for coronavirus.

Gujarat sees another high of cases, tally crosses 43K

Gujarat recorded a new high of 915 Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking its tally to 43,723, while the death toll reached 2,071 with 14 more succumbing to the virus.

Just within the first two weeks of July, Gujarat has witnessed over 11,000 cases, with a new high almost every day.

Surat, the state's new coronavirus hotspot, is also seeing a rising count every passing day. It saw 291 new cases on Tuesday, way ahead of former hotspot, Ahmedabad, which had 167.

Vadodara was at third spot with 76, Bhavnagar had 45, Surendranagar 31, Bharuch 28, Gandhinagar 26, Junagadh 25, Rajkot 24, Banaskantha and Mehsana 21 each, Dahod 19, Jamnagar 18, Kheda 15, Valsad 14, Anand and Navsari 10 each, Mahisagar and Patan nine each, Panchmahals and Sabarkantha eight each, Gir-Somnath, Kutch and Tapi seven each, Morbi five, Narmada four, Chhota Udaipur three, Amreli, Botad and Porbandar two each and one in Aravali.

Of Tuesday's deaths, five were reported from Surat, three each from Ahmedabad and Vadodara and one each from Gandhinagar, Bhavnagar and Banaskantha.

Ahmedabad leads the toll with 1,530, followed way behind by Surat with 228, Vadodara with 56 in Vadodara. There have been 35 deaths in Gandhinagar, 24 in Aravalli, 19 in Patan, 16 in Panchmahals, 15 each in Rajkot and Banaskantha, 14 each in Mehsana, Bhavnagar and Kheda, 13 in Anand and 11 in Bharuch.

Gujarat's mortality rate is 4.73 per cent, which has come down a bit, but is still among the highest in the country.

On Tuesday, the health authorities carried out 8,102 RT-PCR tests, taking the total number to 4,78,367 RT-PCR tests.

A total of 749 patients were discharged on Tuesday, taking the cumulative number to 30,555.

The state had 11,097 active cases, out of which 71 critical patients are on ventilator and the rest are stable.

There are currently 3,39,412 people quarantined - 3,36,843 at home and 2,569 in government facilities.

Maharashtra notches 213 deaths, Mumbai cases fall below 1K

Maharashtra notched 213 Covid-19 deaths on Tuesday while Mumbai's tally of fresh cases fell below the 1,000-mark, providing some relief, health officials said here.

Tuesday's tally of new cases at 6,741 was down from a peak of 8,139 (July 11) but increased by 244 compared to Monday's 6,497.

The number of fatalities in the state again went above the 200-mark from the July lowest of 125 to 213 on Tuesday, though considerably lower than the previous record toll of 295 notched on July 4.

With the fresh fatalities, the state's death toll went up to 10,695 while the total cases touched 267,665, both highest in the country.

According to Tuesday's figures, one death was recorded in roughly every 7 minutes and a staggering 281 new cases every hour in the state.

The recovery rate in the western state increased marginally from 55.38 per cent a day earlier to 55.67 per cent on Tuesday, while the mortality (death) rate stood at 4 per cent.

The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 107,665 are active cases, which is lower vis-a-vis the number of patients cured, indicating a positive sign.

On the positive side, 4,500 cured patients returned home on Tuesday, taking the total number discharges to 149,007, considerably higher than the 107,665 active cases in the state.

In the most cheerful news, a 100-year retired schoolteacher, Arjun G. Naringrekar, taught a ‘lesson' to coronavirus and returned home to Kandivali suburb after celebrating his birthday with doctors, nurses and other care-givers outside the BMC's HinduHridaySamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Hospital in Jogeshwari on Tuesday evening.

Of the 213 fatalities, Mumbai alone accounted for 70 deaths, taking the city's toll to 5,405, while the number of corona cases increased touched 95,100 on Tuesday.

Besides, Thane recorded 64 fatalities, followed Pune (25), Palghar and Jalgaon (8 each), Nashik and Solapur (6 each), Ahmednagar and Aurangabad (4 each), Raigad and Nanded (3 each), Ratnagiri, Latur and Parbhani (2 each), and Satara, Sangli, Akola, Buldhana, Bhandara and Nagpur (1 each).

The MMR (Thane Division) remains on the edge as deaths spiral and cases pile up, with the current toll at 7,543 and a staggering 2,893 new patients, pushing up the number of cases to 179,760 on Tuesday.

Thane cases have touched 65,324 with 1,769 fatalities to emerge as the second worst-hit district after Mumbai in the state.

Pune district continues to zoom ahead by notching 42,092 cases, with the death toll increasing from 1,127 a day earlier to 1,152 on Tuesday.

The Pune Division's (comprising Pune, Solapur and Satara districts) death toll reached 1,578 with 48,425 patients but remains far behind MMR and Thane district.

The next major region of concern is Nashik Division with 782 fatalities and 16,890 positive cases, followed by Aurangabad Division with 401 deaths and 10,314 cases, and Akola Division with 168 fatalities and 3,958 cases.

Next on the list is Kolhapur Division, which has notched 76 deaths and 3,148 patients, Latur Division had 86 fatalities and 2,048 cases, and Nagpur Division recorded 30 deaths and 2,912 cases.

All the eight divisions in the state recorded fatalities on Tuesday, but only Chandrapur (out of total 36) remains a zero COVID death district, though all have notched fresh cases.

Meanwhile, the number of people sent to home quarantine increased from 687,353 earlier to 698,854 now, while those in institutional quarantine went up from 41,660 to 42,350 on Tuesday.

Karnataka reports record 87 deaths, tally reaches 44,077

A record number of 87 COVID patients succumbed to the virus in Karnataka, while 2,496 new cases raised the state's tally to 44,077, an official said on Tuesday.

"New COVID deaths 87," said a health official about the fatalities recorded across the state in the past 24 hours. Following the highest single-day COVID deaths, the state's death toll rose to 842.

As many as 56 of the 87 deaths occurred in Bengaluru alone, as cough, fever and breathlessness continued to be the most common symptoms.

Meanwhile, 2,496 cases were reported in the state with Bengaluru leading the chart with 1,267 cases.

With the addition of new cases, the city's COVID tally breached the 20,000-mark at 20,969, out of which 15,599 are active cases. Bengaluru alone accounts for 60 per cent of all the active cases in the state.

Among the new cases on Tuesday, excluding Bengaluru, Mysuru accounted for 125 infections, followed by Kalaburagi (121), Dharwad (100), Ballari (99), Koppal (98) and Dakshina Kannada (91), among others.

On a positive note, 1,142 patients were discharged on Tuesday, 664 in Bengaluru Urban alone, raising the total number of discharges to 17,390. Likewise, cases in ICU marginally fell by five to 540.

Of the total 44,077 cases, active cases amount to 25,839 in Karnataka.

Amid rising cases in the southern state, the government has mandated that all those who gave their swab samples for testing may be infectious and advised abundant caution.

"Persons who have provided swab samples for COVID testing may be infectious. Hence, as a matter of abundant caution, all such persons shall be advised strict isolation or quarantine," said Additional Chief Secretary Jawaid Akhtar.

Akhtar said such people should be isolated until their results are communicated.

Telangana reports 1,524 new cases, 10 deaths

A total of 1,524 COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths were reported in Telangana on Tuesday, said the state's health department.

The state's total COVID-19 cases now stand at 37,745, including 12,531 active cases and 24,840 recoveries. The deadly virus has so far claimed 375 lives in the State.

93 new cases reported in Madhya Pradesh's Indore

Indore on Tuesday reported 93 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of novel coronavirus cases in the district to 5,496, said Office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in a bulletin.

As per the bulletin, a total of 46 persons were discharged on Tuesday taking the total number of recovered/discharged patients to 4,074.

There are 1,144 active cases in the district, and 4,825 people are under institutional quarantine.

The death toll touched 278 after 5 deaths were reported on Tuesday including 2 deaths which the district health department termed as 'reconciliation" from the month of April.

609 recoveries reported in Odisha

Odisha recorded its highest 609 recoveries of COVID-19 patients in a single day on Tuesday, taking the total recovered cases in the state to 9,864 against the total 14,280 positive cases reported in the state.

As per the State Health and Family Welfare Department, the recovered 609 cases are from 21 districts -- 268 from Ganjam, 135 from Sundargarh, 37 from Khurdha, 32 from Cuttack, 25 from Balasore, 23 from Keonjhar, 18 from Mayurbhanj, 12 from Bhadrak, 12 from Puri, eight from Sambalpur, seven each from Baragarh and Jagatsinghpur, six from Jajpur, four each from Jharsuguda and Kendrapara, three from Bolangir, two each from Koraput, Nabarangpur and Rayagada, one each from Gajapati and Nayagarh district.

Till the date, Odisha has total 4,320 active cases and 74 persons have died due to the virus.  

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, in a high-level meeting on Tuesday reviewed the management of COVID crisis in the state and directed officials to strengthen monitoring in the focus districts such as Ganjam, Cuttack, Jajpur, Sundargarh and Khurda.

The Odisha Government will initiate Plasma Therapy to treat COVID patients from Wednesday at three dedicated COVID hospitals in the state, the government said in a press release.

Plasma Therapy will be started from today in SUM Hospital, KIMS Hospital in Bhubaneswar and Ashwini Hospital in Cuttack. SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack will function as the Nodal Centre for Plasma Therapy.
