West Bengal reports record 3,340 new cases; tally at 266,974

West Bengal reported its highest single-day spike of 3,340 new cases, taking the tally to 2,66,974, according to a bulletin issued by the Health Department. 

Sixty-two more patients died in the state, following which the toll rose to 5,132, it said. 

The discharge rate in the state improved to 87.92 per cent as the state saw 3,013 recoveries.

Andhra Pradesh's Covid-19 aggregate touched 713,000 today as the state completed over 6 million sample testing. The overall positive cases registered in the state so far increased to 713,014 after 6,224 were added in the 24 hours.

MP coronavirus case count rises by 1,811 to reach 133,918

Madhya Pradesh today saw 1,811 new coronavirus cases, pushing its caseload to 133,918, while 27 deaths took the pandemic's toll in the state to 2,399, an official said.

Seven deaths were reported in Indore, three each in Gwalior and Sagar, two each in Jabalpur and Sehore and one each in Bhopal, Dhar, Shivpuri, Damoh, Vidisha, Khandwa, Chhindwara, Rajgarh, Shajapur and Singrauli.

445 new cases, 8 deaths, 523 discharged in Goa

Goa's caseload went up by 445 and death toll by eight on Saturday, while 523 people were discharged during the day, an official said. 

The state now has 34,900 cases, including 450 deaths, and 29,527 people have recovered, leaving it with 4,923 active ones, he said. 

A total of 1,492 samples were tested for the infection during the day, he added.

Delhi Prisons dept urges Govt to extend convicts' emergency parole

The Delhi Prisons department has requested the city government to extend the emergency parole granted to convicts by one month in view of the existing COVID-19 situation, officials said. 

In a letter to the home department, it said the emergency parole can be given considering the current pandemic situation. 

According to the officials, there are currently 4,250 such inmates, comprising 3,100 undertrials on interim bail and 1,150 convicts on emergency parole, who are out of jails as part of the prisons department's recent decongestion drive.

Rajasthan records 2,150 fresh cases

As many as 2,150 new cases, 2003 recovered cases and 14 deaths reported in Rajasthan today. 

The total number of positive cases rises to 1,41,846, including 21,075 active cases, 1,19,241 recovered cases and 1,530 deaths, said State Health Department.

'185 inmates test positive; temporary jails being set up across Jammu'

A total of 185 prisoners have tested positive for COVID-19 in different jails across the Jammu region, Director General of Prisons VK Singh said.

He said that temporary jails are being set up in various districts to isolate the asymptomatic positive detenues as part of efforts to ensure safety of the jail inmates and staffers.

61 more deaths, over 3,500 fresh cases in UP

With 3,665 fresh cases, Uttar Pradesh's COVID-19 tally reached 4,10,635 today, while 61 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 5,977.

The total number of people who have recovered from the disease has risen to 3,56,826 after 4,860 more patients were discharged today, a health department bulletin said.

The number of active cases in the state stands at 47,832, the bulletin said.

Maha police record 190 new cases; tally at 23,879

At least 190 personnel of the Maharashtra police tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, raising the count of infections in the force to 23,879, an official said.

Apart from this, the death of two police personnel has taken the toll in the department to 250, which includes 25 officers, the official added.

Jharkhand minister dies of COVID

Jharkhand State Minority Welfare Minister Haji Hussain Ansari died of COVID-19 on Saturday. He was 73. 

Ansari, a senior JMM leader, was admitted to the Medanta hospital around two weeks back after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

A spokesperson of the Medanta Hospital said that Ansari had tested negative for COVID-19 on Friday, which meant that he had recovered.

Section 144 imposed in Kerala amid spike in COVID-19 cases

The Kerala government has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC from today onwards, in the wake of increasing COVID-19 cases in the state.

The order -- issued by Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta -- shall come into effect from today till October 31. The assembly of gatherings of more than five persons will not be permitted.

"In light of the surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, public congregations and gatherings pose an impending danger of a super spread of the infection. 

Hence, an assembly or gathering of more than five people at a time can not be permitted," the order read.

Delhi's positivity rate down at 5.19 per cent

Out of 56,258 samples tested yesterday, 2,920 samples tested positive for Covid-19. The positivity rate has decreased to 5.19 per cent, said Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain.

Tripura reports 190 new cases

Tripura's COVID-19 tally rose to 26,552 today as 190 more people tested positive for the virus, a health department official said. 

The death toll climbed to 286 with six more people succumbing to the infection, he said. 

West Tripura district, of which state capital Agartala is a part, has accounted for 156 of the 280 Covid-19 deaths, the official said. 

Tripura currently has 5,369 active coronavirus cases, while 20,874 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty- three patients have migrated to other states, the official said.

21% of global recoveries in India

India maintains top global ranking with maximum recoveries of 54,27,706, accounting for 21% of the global recovered cases, said Union Health Ministry. 

India has also maintained its global position with one of the lowest case fatality rates (CFR) of 1.56% when compared to global CFT of 2.97%, added the Ministry.

10 new cases push tally of Andamans to 3,858

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,858 on Saturday as 10 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.

Five new patients have travel history, while five fresh infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.

Eight more people were cured of the disease, the official said.

The Union territory now has 174 active coronavirus cases, while 3,631 people have been cured of the disease and 53 patients have succumbed to the infection so far, he said.

The administration had till Friday sent 59,676 samples for COVID-19 tests, of which 43 reports were awaited, the official added.

India's death toll surpasses 1-lakh, total cases at 64,73,545

With an increase of 1,069 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the COVID-19 toll surpassed 1-lakh in India on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).

With the latest increase, the COVID-19 toll in the country now stands at 1,00,842.

Meanwhile, the country reported 79,476 new cases, taking the tally of people infected with coronavirus to 64,73,545, the Ministry said. 

The total COVID-19 count includes 9,44,996 active cases and 54,27,707 cured, discharged or migrated cases.\

Maharashtra continues to be the worst affected by the pandemic with 2,61,313 active cases, 11,17,720 cured and discharged cases and 37,480 deaths.

Karnataka with 1,12,005 active cases is the next on the list. While 4,99,506 patients have been cured in the state, the disease has claimed 9,119 lives so far.

Kerala with 77,564 active cases is also severely affected, however, 1,35,144 patients have been cured in the state and 791 people have died due to COVID-19.

In Andhra Pradesh, there are 56,897 active cases while 6,43,993 patients have been cured of the disease. Moreover, 5,900 people have succumbed to the virus in the state.

As many as 2,53,784 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged in the national capital, which has reported 5,438 deaths so far. Delhi currently has 26,450 active cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 7,78,50,403 samples have been tested up to October 2 for COVID-19 in the country. Out of these 11,32,675 samples were tested on Friday.

Jharkhand's COVID-19 caseload rose to 85,400 on Saturday as 736 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.

Eight more people succumbed to the infection, taking the state's coronavirus death toll to 729, he said.

The state now has 11,243 active coronavirus cases, while 73,428 people have been cured of the disease so far, the official said.

A total of 28,100 samples were tested for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, he added.

1,718 new cases, 8 fatalities in Telangana

Telangana registered 1,718 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 1.97 lakh while eight more deaths pushed the toll to 1,153.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 285, followed by Rangareddy 129 and Medchal Malkajgiri 115 districts.

The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.67 lakh, while 28,328 are under treatment. As many as 49,084 samples were
tested on October 2.

Cumulatively, 31.53 lakh samples have been tested. The samples tested per million population was 84,729, the bulletin said.

Kerala sees over 9K cases, 20 deaths

Kerala seems to be moving towards a 10,000 daily COVID tally, with the state recording 9,258 new cases on Friday.

In a statement issued here, state Health Minister K.K. Shailaja said at present, there are 77,482 active cases.

"The day saw 4,092 people recovering, which was the highest in a single day, and so far, 1,35,144 people have been cured. 63,175 samples were tested in the past 24 hours," she said.

The state also saw 20 new deaths, taking the toll to 791.

Yediyurappa's son Vijayendra tests positive

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa's younger son B.Y. Vijayendra tested positive for coronavirus on Friday, a party leader said.

"Vijayendra tested COVID positive during a routine check-up earlier in the day. As he is asymptomatic, he has isolated himself at home," said a party official here.

\Vijayandra, 45, is the ruling BJP's state unit Vice-President.

"I am doing fine. I have isolated myself as I am asymptomatic," tweeted Vijayendra in Kannada.

He also requested all those who came in contact with him recently to take precautions and stay safe.

Recoveries outnumber fresh cases in Andhra

Andhra Pradesh on Friday registered 6,555 new Covid-19 cases, raising the state's tally to 7.06 lakh, even as 7,485 people recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours across the state.

The positive trend of districts logging less than 1,000 infections continued, as three districts recorded cases in 900s on Friday.

As always, East Godavari district accounted for the highest number of cases at 975, taking the district's tally near the 1 lakh-mark at 99,135.

Mumbai region toll crosses 16K, highest in India

Covid-19 deaths and cases continued to cause concern as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region toll crossed the 16K mark - higher than all states barring Maharashtra - while Mumbai city fatalities surpassed 9K-level, health officials said here on Friday.

The state witnessed 424 deaths on Friday, lower than the peak of 515 (Sep. 15), and the death toll zoomed from 37,056 to 37,480 now.

The state recorded 15,591 new patients - though lower than the peak single-day tally of 24,886 (Sep. 11) - pushing up the state total from 14,00,922 to 14,16,513 cases till date.

In relief, the state recovery rate also shot up for the third day - from 78.84 per cent to 78.91 per cent - while the current mortality (death) rate stood at 2.65 per cent on Friday.

Against this, 13,294 fully recovered patients returned home taking up the total number of discharged patients from 11,04,426 to 11,17,720 till date – much higher than the 260,876 'active cases' (ill) currently in the state.

As per the figures on Friday, there was one death roughly every 3.39 minutes and 650 new cases added every hour to the state tally.

1,310 new cases take Gujarat's tally past 1.4L-mark

Gujarat on Friday reported 1,310 new Covid-19 cases, taking the state's coronavirus tally to 1,40,055, while 15 fatalities in the past 24 hours took the state's death toll to 3,478.

As many as 56,732 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 1,310 returned positive.

Hotspot Surat reported 278 cases on Friday, followed by Ahmedabad (198), Rajkot (151), Vadodara (129), Jamnagar (86), Gandhinagar (45), Mahesana (36), Bharuch (32), Kutch and Junagadh (31 each), Amreli (28), Patan (27), Bhavnagar and Banaskantha (26 each), Panchmahals and Surendranagar (21 each), Morbi (20), Narmada (14), Anand and Kheda (12 each), Mahisagar and Sabarkantha (11 each), Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir-Somnath and Navsari (10 each), Porbandar (7), Aravalli and Dahod (6 each), Tapi and Valsad (5 each), Chotta Udepur (3) and Botad (2).

In September, Gujarat had reported 42,676 cases, an average of 1,422 cases per day.

Karnataka's death toll crosses 9,000-mark

The Covid-19 toll in Karnataka crossed 9,000-mark, with 125 patients succumbing to the infection till Thursday night, taking the number of deaths in the southern state to 9,119 till date.

"With no let-up in the pandemic spread, 8,793 new cases were registered till Thursday from across the state, taking its COVID tally to 6,20,630, including 1,11,986 active cases," said the state health bulletin on Friday night.

As 7,094 patients were discharged from across the state till Thursday, recoveries rose to 4,99,506 till date.

Bengaluru registered 4,259 fresh cases, taking its COVID tally to 2,41,775, including 51,389 active cases, while 1,87,361 were discharged so far, with 2,298 till Thursday night.

With 47 succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, the death toll in the city touched 3,024 since the virus broke out in the state on March 9.

Bengal BJP leader tests positive

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anupam Hazra tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, health officials said.

The BJP leader had developed certain symptoms and his samples were tested for coronavirus. He has been admitted to a private hospital here after the report came positive.

1,090 fresh COVID cases take J&K tally past 77k mark

Jammu & Kashmir reported 1,090 fresh COVID cases on Friday taking the total tally of the Union Territory past 77,000.

Out of 1,090 new cases on Friday, 603 were reported from Jammu while 487 were reported from Kashmir as the total number of COVID infected patients reached 77,253 in J&K, a statement issued by Information and Public Relations department said.

Out of these, 59,952 have recovered completely while 1,212 have died including 14 deaths on Friday.

The total number of active cases in J&K are reported to be 16,089 of which 9,153 are from Jammu and 6,936 are from Kashmir.

COVID vaccine to be available from January says Sharad Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Friday said that the Covid-19 vaccine being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune would be made available by the end of January 2021.

The 79-year-old leader's brief comments came after a visit to the SII facility to get a dose of the BCG vaccine to increase immunity.

This was Pawar's second visit since August to the SII which is currently under global spotlight for its plans to produce vaccines against coronavirus.

SII Chairman Dr Cyrus S. Poonawalla and his son and CEO Adar Poonawala share a close rapport with the Pawar family.

New Delhi:  As many as 25 states and union territories (UTs) have reported a fall in the number of active cases during the last week, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)  on Saturday.

"25 States/UTs have reported a fall in the number of Active Cases during the last week. Higher number of daily recoveries and persistently regressing fatality rate are leading to the lower number of active cases on a daily basis," the Ministry tweeted.

At least 76.62 per cent of the active coronavirus cases have been reported from 10 states and UTs, it said on Friday.

Maharashtra is leading the states' tally with more than 2.5 lakh cases, the government informed, adding that active cases contribute only 14.74 per cent to the positive caseload of the country.

Yediyurappa's son Vijayendra tests positive

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa's younger son B.Y. Vijayendra tested positive for coronavirus on Friday, a party leader said.

"Vijayendra tested COVID positive during a routine check-up earlier in the day. As he is asymptomatic, he has isolated himself at home," said a party official here.

\Vijayandra, 45, is the ruling BJP's state unit Vice-President.

"I am doing fine. I have isolated myself as I am asymptomatic," tweeted Vijayendra in Kannada.

He also requested all those who came in contact with him recently to take precautions and stay safe.

Recoveries outnumber fresh cases in Andhra

Andhra Pradesh on Friday registered 6,555 new Covid-19 cases, raising the state's tally to 7.06 lakh, even as 7,485 people recovered from the virus in the last 24 hours across the state.

The positive trend of districts logging less than 1,000 infections continued, as three districts recorded cases in 900s on Friday.

As always, East Godavari district accounted for the highest number of cases at 975, taking the district's tally near the 1 lakh-mark at 99,135.

Mumbai region toll crosses 16K, highest in India

Covid-19 deaths and cases continued to cause concern as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region toll crossed the 16K mark - higher than all states barring Maharashtra - while Mumbai city fatalities surpassed 9K-level, health officials said here on Friday.

The state witnessed 424 deaths on Friday, lower than the peak of 515 (Sep. 15), and the death toll zoomed from 37,056 to 37,480 now.

The state recorded 15,591 new patients - though lower than the peak single-day tally of 24,886 (Sep. 11) - pushing up the state total from 14,00,922 to 14,16,513 cases till date.

In relief, the state recovery rate also shot up for the third day - from 78.84 per cent to 78.91 per cent - while the current mortality (death) rate stood at 2.65 per cent on Friday.

Against this, 13,294 fully recovered patients returned home taking up the total number of discharged patients from 11,04,426 to 11,17,720 till date – much higher than the 260,876 'active cases' (ill) currently in the state.

As per the figures on Friday, there was one death roughly every 3.39 minutes and 650 new cases added every hour to the state tally.

1,310 new cases take Gujarat's tally past 1.4L-mark

Gujarat on Friday reported 1,310 new Covid-19 cases, taking the state's coronavirus tally to 1,40,055, while 15 fatalities in the past 24 hours took the state's death toll to 3,478.

As many as 56,732 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 1,310 returned positive.

Hotspot Surat reported 278 cases on Friday, followed by Ahmedabad (198), Rajkot (151), Vadodara (129), Jamnagar (86), Gandhinagar (45), Mahesana (36), Bharuch (32), Kutch and Junagadh (31 each), Amreli (28), Patan (27), Bhavnagar and Banaskantha (26 each), Panchmahals and Surendranagar (21 each), Morbi (20), Narmada (14), Anand and Kheda (12 each), Mahisagar and Sabarkantha (11 each), Devbhumi Dwarka, Gir-Somnath and Navsari (10 each), Porbandar (7), Aravalli and Dahod (6 each), Tapi and Valsad (5 each), Chotta Udepur (3) and Botad (2).

In September, Gujarat had reported 42,676 cases, an average of 1,422 cases per day.

Karnataka's death toll crosses 9,000-mark

The Covid-19 toll in Karnataka crossed 9,000-mark, with 125 patients succumbing to the infection till Thursday night, taking the number of deaths in the southern state to 9,119 till date.

"With no let-up in the pandemic spread, 8,793 new cases were registered till Thursday from across the state, taking its COVID tally to 6,20,630, including 1,11,986 active cases," said the state health bulletin on Friday night.

As 7,094 patients were discharged from across the state till Thursday, recoveries rose to 4,99,506 till date.

Bengaluru registered 4,259 fresh cases, taking its COVID tally to 2,41,775, including 51,389 active cases, while 1,87,361 were discharged so far, with 2,298 till Thursday night.

With 47 succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, the death toll in the city touched 3,024 since the virus broke out in the state on March 9.

Bengal BJP leader tests positive

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Anupam Hazra tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, health officials said.

The BJP leader had developed certain symptoms and his samples were tested for coronavirus. He has been admitted to a private hospital here after the report came positive.

1,090 fresh COVID cases take J&K tally past 77k mark

Jammu & Kashmir reported 1,090 fresh COVID cases on Friday taking the total tally of the Union Territory past 77,000.

Out of 1,090 new cases on Friday, 603 were reported from Jammu while 487 were reported from Kashmir as the total number of COVID infected patients reached 77,253 in J&K, a statement issued by Information and Public Relations department said.

Out of these, 59,952 have recovered completely while 1,212 have died including 14 deaths on Friday.

The total number of active cases in J&K are reported to be 16,089 of which 9,153 are from Jammu and 6,936 are from Kashmir.

COVID vaccine to be available from January says Sharad Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar on Friday said that the Covid-19 vaccine being manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune would be made available by the end of January 2021.

The 79-year-old leader's brief comments came after a visit to the SII facility to get a dose of the BCG vaccine to increase immunity.

This was Pawar's second visit since August to the SII which is currently under global spotlight for its plans to produce vaccines against coronavirus.

SII Chairman Dr Cyrus S. Poonawalla and his son and CEO Adar Poonawala share a close rapport with the Pawar family.

COVID-19 LIVE Updates

New Delhi:  As many as 25 states and union territories (UTs) have reported a fall in the number of active cases during the last week, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW)  on Saturday.

"25 States/UTs have reported a fall in the number of Active Cases during the last week. Higher number of daily recoveries and persistently regressing fatality rate are leading to the lower number of active cases on a daily basis," the Ministry tweeted.

At least 76.62 per cent of the active coronavirus cases have been reported from 10 states and UTs, it said on Friday.

Maharashtra is leading the states' tally with more than 2.5 lakh cases, the government informed, adding that active cases contribute only 14.74 per cent to the positive caseload of the country.
