New Delhi: Recent move of the Central government to make the Crop Insurance Scheme voluntary has received a huge backlash from the opposition. Congress the accused the ruling NDA Government of running "private company profits" under Crop Insurance programme.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala has slammed the Modi cabinet for making another attack on the nation's farmers. The premium paid by the Central Government on the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme and Weather-based Crop Insurance Scheme has been cut down by almost 100% which has made the plight of the farmers pathetic. He further claimed that after this decision, farmers will have to bear 27% of the insurance premium amount.

He said, "Till date 2% of the insurance premium amount was given by the farmers in this scheme and the remaining 98% of the amount was paid by the Central and Provincial Governments in a 50-50 share. But now only 25% of the premium amount will be paid by the Central Government. With this move, the entire burden has come down to farmers. NDA govt should understand that this decision will put farmers in distress. Under the 'Crop Insurance Scheme,' many private companies are making profit''.

''Going by the data of last 3 years, Insurance companies took a premium of Rs 77,808 crore from the scheme and made a profit of Rs 19,202 crore which is an example of gross capitalism,'' he alleged.

Alleging the govt of making profits Surjewala said that it is not possible farmer of the country to pay 27% insurance premium instead of 2%. This entire decision is a conspiracy by BJP.

''Who will take responsibility of the provincial governments that they will not cut its stake in the premium amount of the scheme? What is the reason that the central government took this decision? Will, it not harm the farmers? '', Surjewala asked.
