New Delhi: In an aim to counter Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on the digital platform, Congress has launched a social media campaign, namely 'Save Democracy, Save India', under which the party will recruit 5 lakh 'social media warriors' from all across the country.

The campaign was launched at All India Congress Committee headquarters by senior Congress leader Pawan Bansal, party spokesperson Pawan Khera and social media team head Rohan Gupta.

During the press briefing, a video message of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was also being shared in which he exhorted the youth of this country to participate in the campaign to fight the 'paid' trolls on various online platforms.

"The backbone of the attack on this nation is a troll army, thousands of people who spread hatred, anger and are paid to do so. We also need warriors to defend liberal values, to defend the ideas of compassion, peace, harmony and affection," said Gandhi.

Addressing the media, Rohan Gupta said that Congress will do press conferences at the state level to appeal to the people for participating in the campaign.

Later, people will be selected on an interview basis where they can choose any of the social media platforms in which they would like to work for Congress' IT Cell. He also clarified that it would be a volunteering service and the party will not pay to its 'warriors'.

The move comes after a massive "India Against Propaganda" pushback which started after pop star Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg tweeted in support of the protesting farmers of India.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera also attacked the BJP IT Cell, saying, "Since BJP has come to power, I'm glad that people believe Congress is not a cadre-based party. We are an issue-based party."
