Schor said mere awareness will not be enough

New Delhi: Talking about water scarcity and environmental issues prevalent today, Uri Schor, spokesperson of Israel's Water Authority said that if everyone realises the problems and decides to contribute, climate change can surely be beaten.

Schor said Israel used technology to produce more crops with the same amount of water

The relations between India and Israel have taken giant strides in recent years. Apart from well-known defense ties, 'Water Management' has become an important area of partnership between both nations.

Foreseeing acute water crisis in the country in the near future, the Modi administration is working strenuously with Israel to deal with it.

Speaking exclusively to ETV Bharat, Israel water authority spokesperson Uri Schor claimed that with the creation of a centralised ministry (Jal Shakti) to deal with all water-related issues, India is in the right direction to tackle the problem.

Elaborating on the water crisis in Israel, which consists of 60 per cent of desert and arid land and recycles nearly 90 per cent (highest in the world), Schor said that the nation has a lot of experience in dealing with the problem.

"Due to climate change, every year we get less rainfall. The population is growing. Therefore, the demand for water is also increasing. But we have taken three major steps to deal with it. First, we try to conserve water which we get naturally. We have built many reservoirs. We try and catch floodwaters. The second step is to decrease the demand for water. The third step is to prevent leakages from the prevailing infrastructure," he said.

On being asked about the awareness drives towards water conservation in India, he said, "Awareness should not only be limited to water shortage. People should also have knowledge about what they can do. If each and everyone realises that it is the problem of the entire country, we can surely beat climate change."

While in India, nearly 80 per cent of water is consumed by the agriculture sector, Schor explained that with the help of technology, Israel has learned to produce more crops with the same amount of water.
