Chronology of firecracker factory explosions

A fire at a firecracker factory in Batala in Punjab's Gurdaspur took 23 lives. Several similar incidents in the past have taken several lives.

Hyderabad (Telangana): A fire broke out at a firecracker factory in Batala in Punjab's Gurdaspur on Wednesday. At least 23 people lost their lives and 20 were reportedly injured in the incident.

But this is not the first case of a firecracker factory explosion. Several such incidents in the past have taken several lives and ruined hundreds of lives.

Let's have a look at some similar incidents:

March 27, 2019 - Tamil Nadu: Seven workers of a licensed private fireworks unit at Mannargudi in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvarur district died in an explosion.

July 4, 2018 - Telangana: Twelve workers were killed and several others injured in a major blast at a cracker unit at Kotilingala Devasthanam in Kashibugga area of Telangana's Warangal.

October 18, 2017 - Odisha: AT least ten persons, including two minors, were killed in three separate incidents of explosions at firecracker units in Odisha.

In Balasore alone, eight persons were charred to death and 12 injured in an explosion in an illegal cracker manufacturing unit at Bahabalpur on the eve of Diwali. The other incidents were reported from Pipili and Rourkela.

December 31, 2016 - Andhra Pradesh: Two persons were killed and 11 others were injured in an explosion inside a cracker-manufacturing unit at Porlukatta on the outskirts of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.

April 10, 2016 - Kerala: 112 killed after Kerala temple fireworks rocket out of control near Kali temple in Paravur near Kerala's Kollam.

May 7, 2015 - West Bengal: At least 11 people were killed following a blast in a firecracker factory at Pingla in the West Midnapore district.

October 20, 2014 - Andhra Pradesh: An explosion at a fire-cracker production unit in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh claimed 11 lives ahead of the Diwali festival.

November 13, 2012 - Uttar Pradesh: Eight persons, including six members of a family, were killed and 12 others injured in an explosion at a house in Yaqoobpur town in Bela police station of Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya.

Firecrackers were being manufactured illegally at the house for the Diwali festival.

September 5, 2012 - Tamil Nadu: Explosion in a private firecracker factory at Sivakasi of Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu kills 54 injures 74.

August 25, 2006 - Uttar Pradesh: Seven workers, including minors, were killed and 10 others injured in an explosion at a cracker factory in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarpur.

September 15, 2005 - Bihar: 35 killed and 50 injured in three illegal firecracker factories at Khusrupur village in Bihar's Patna district.

Intro:New Delhi : Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, Mumbai 26/11 mastermind Zaki Ur Rehman Lakhvi and 1993 Bombay terror attack mastermind Dawood Ibrahim have been declared individual terrorists under the amended Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

"Maulana Masood Azhar, is founder, chief and key leader of proscribed terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed, which is listed as terrorist organisation under the First schedule to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 at serial number 6," MHA said in a gazette notification.


According to MHA, Masood Azhar is accused in various cases registered and is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency and a chargesheet had been filed against him in Pathankot air base attack case.




Body:The notification added that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is founder, chief and key leader of proscribed terror organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) / Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and LeT is listed as a terrorist organisation under the First Schedule to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 at serial No. 5. Saeed has been involved in various terrorist attacks in India, which include Red Fort attack (22 December, 2000), Rampur attack (1st January, 2008), 26/11 Mumbai attack and attack on BSF convoy at Udhampur in Jammu & Kashmir (5th August, 2015).

The MHA also declared underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi (LeT chief) as a terrorist under the UAPA. The MHA said that Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar runs an international underworld crime syndicate and is involved in pertaining acts of terror, promoting religious fundamentalism, terror financing arms smuggling , circulation of counterfeit currency.

In its gazettee notification, MHA also added that Dawood is designated as a Global terrorist by the United Nations under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 and he is listed in Al-Qaida sanction list on the 3rd November, 2003.


Conclusion:"A series of bomb blasts were executed by Dawood Ibrahim and his associates in Mumbai in March 1993, which resulted in deaths of 257 persons and injured over 1000 persons apart from destruction of properties on a massive scale," added the gazette notification.

The notification comes nearly a month after Parliament amended the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 under which individuals can be declared as terrorists. It also provides for putting travel ban on such individuals once they are declared as terrorists.

The Act received the president assent on 8 August and was notified by the official gazette on 14 August.
