Chief Justice Bobde faces threat to life, security cover gets upgraded to Z-plus

The Union government has decided to give Z plus category security to Chief Justice of India SA Bobde following intelligence reports indicating a threat to his life. The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to provide Z plus security to Justice Bobde.

New Delhi: The Union government has given 'Z plus' security cover to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, who was part of the 5 judge constitution bench which settled the decades-old Ram Janmabhoomi Babri Masjid title dispute case, following intelligence reports indicating a threat to his life.

Earlier, CJI had 'Z' category security, which has now been upgraded to 'Z plus', following life-threat.

The Z-plus security cover — one of the highest in the country — is provided by one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), preferably the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered the CRPF to provide Z plus category security to CJI Bobde.

Who's CJI Bobde?

  • Born on April 24, 1956, at Nagpur in Maharashtra, Justice Bobde is the son of Arvind Bobde, former Advocate General of Maharashtra.
  • He completed his Bachelor of Arts and LLB degrees from Nagpur University, and was enrolled as an advocate of the Bar Council of Maharashtra in 1978.
  • Justice Bobde practised law at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court with appearances at Bombay before the Principal Seat and before the Supreme Court for over 21 years.
  • He was designated as a senior advocate in 1998.
  • Justice Bobde was elevated to Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000, as Additional Judge and sworn in as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court on October 16, 2012. He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 12, 2013.
  • Justice Bobde took oath as the CJI on November 18, 2019.
