New Delhi: India's long attempt along with many other countries to get a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council hasn't yielded any result. Leave aside getting a membership, none of the P5 member nations with veto power have shown any enthusiasm to bring reforms at the UNSC as it might jeopardise their authority in the current world order.
But recently, there has been calculated shift in India's position. Apart from telling the world that why India deserves to have a permanent seat at UNSC, New Delhi has started questioning the credibility of the world body which is still tied to the old order.
While PM Modi talked about the acceptance of multi-polar world order in his Houston and UN speech, Dr Jaishankar claimed that UNSC without India affects the UN's credibility.
Observer Research Foundation's Director Research Prof Harsh V Pant believes any reforms in the current UNSC is highly unlikely as it is a political issue where China won't like India to be part of it.
He even went on to claim that the seeds of lack of reforms at the UN are imbedded in the very system itself. Though he reiterated what External Affairs Minister said that if the UN doesn't reform then its very credibility is at stake.
In the past, India had been UNSC's non-permanent member for seven times. Recently, it was unanimously endorsed by the 55 member Asia-Pacific group including China and Pakistan for 2021-22.
