New Delhi: After a smooth passage in Lok Sabha, Citizenship Amendment Bill has been tabled in Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday, despite facing a strong protest from the opposition parties.

Congress party alleged that the BJP government is basically trying to divert the nation's attention from the real issues including unemployment, economic slowdown and the atrocities against women.

While speaking to ETV Bharat, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said, "Citizenship Amendment Bill is a direct attack against the Constitution, against the fundamental values of people of this country. They are basically trying to divert the attention of people from the real issues of this nation."

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong statement during the BJP's Parliamentary party meeting ahead of today's proceedings by saying that some opposition parties are speaking the same language as Pakistan on CAB.

Venugopal accused PM Modi for "misguiding the country" by making such statements over the opposition parties.

Congress senior leader, Mukul Wasnik said, "It is very unfortunate that our Prime Minister believes that whoever is against their party's ideology, is basically trying to favour Pakistan. India is a democratic country, different political parties can have different ideologies. Making such statements is like imposing dictatorship upon people."

The controversial bill was passed in Lok Sabha, on Tuesday, with a majority votes of 311. Aggressive protests have erupted in various parts of the country. Congress party has also asked the state units to protest against the Citizenship Amendment bill at their state headquarters.
