New Delhi: Following Kunal Kamra's tweet on the Chief Justice of India (CJI) SA Bobde, Attorney General of India (AG) KK Venugopal on Friday gave consent to initiate a contempt petition against the stand-up comedian.

Earlier this week, Kunal had posted a photo of him from inside a flight showing his two fingers and captioned it writing that "One of these 2 fingers is for CJI Arvind Bobde.....ok let me not confuse you it's the middle one".

In response to this, Advocate Anuj Singh had written a fresh letter to the AG for initiating contempt against Kamra claiming that the post had gone viral and disrespected the judiciary.

"The depiction of the two fingers, with the legend that he means the middle one, is to deliberately insult the Chief Justice of India which would equally be an insult to the Supreme Court of India itself, which the Chief Justice heads. The said tweet is grossly vulgar and obnoxious, and I have no doubt that it would tend to lower the authority of the Supreme Court of India as well as undermine the confidence that the litigant public has the institution of the Supreme Court of India itself. In view of the above, I accordingly grant consent under section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act,1975," read AG's letter granting consent to the fresh letter.

For the ongoing contempt case, Kunal had said that he won't apologise for his posts and explained why he had such an opinion.

Kamra has always been vocal about his opinions on the establishment and often makes jokes mocking the establishment.
