New Delhi: Attorney General Of India, KK Venugopal, expressed his concerns over the pendency of cases in the judiciary which is weighing it down and the struggle a common man has to go through if he files a case. Speaking on the occasion of Constitution Day celebration organised by SCBA, AG said that there are 4.29 lakh cases which have been pending since last 30 years meaning that a person who files a case at 50 or 60 years of age can not even see the fruits of his efforts.
"Justice delivery system can not be one where a litigant cannot see the results of the case on which he has placed his aspirations and hopes," said AG Venugopal.
"The rich and powerful and corporates will not be affected by the delay. They can stick out for 30 years. But individuals from the middle class and poor, it is a daunting task to wait for 30 years. Their money and patience will be exhausted," said AG.
He cited the law commission report according to which India needs at least 50 judges per million cases in order to clear the pendency. He said that instead of the current strength of 20,588 judges, we should have 1.36 lakh judges. "Our judges have to work long hours due to this," said AG.
Talking about dealing covid crisis, AG said that once the situation improves it might increase the pendency of cases. Currently, the limitation period for filing cases has been extended keeping coronavirus in view.
SCBA had organised Constitution Day celebration via video conferencing which was also attended by the Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
