Port Blair: Union Home Minister Amit Shah lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to name the Andaman islands after Param Vir Chakra awardees on the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's 126th birth anniversary which is also celebrated as Parakram Divas. This step will ensure these bravehearts are remembered forever, Shah said.

"The islands named today after Param Vir Chakra awardees will be the site of inspiration for generations to come," he said. Speaking about Netaji, Shah said that the freedom fighter was the first to liberate Andaman. Lauding the sacrifice of the freedom fighters who were languishing in the Celular jail during the freedom movement Shah said that despite British torture they did now bow down.

Amit Shah arrived in Port Blair on Sunday night for a two-day visit to Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He is also scheduled to take stock of development activities in the islands. Shah hoisted the national flag in the morning. The Netaji Stadium from where Shah addressed people is the same place where the freedom fighter had unfurled the Tricolour on December 30, 1943.

Back then, the stadium used to be known as Gymkhana Ground. Shah is also likely to visit the Cellular Jail. That will be followed by a meeting with the core committee members of the BJP, the officials said. The Union minister is set to take stock of various developmental initiatives in the archipelago.
