New Delhi: The Attorney General of India, KK Venugopal Friday refused to grant consent for initiating contempt proceedings against the National President of Azad Samaj Party, Chandrashekhar Azad, for his statements against the judiciary.

Advocate Vineet Jindal had sought initiation of contempt proceedings against Azad based on statements he made during a television show. Azad had alleged that judges are appointed based on their personal relations and the process was biased.

Jindal had argued that the statements like these would set a precedent for political leaders to make reckless allegations against judiciary and affect the trust and faith of people in the judiciary.

AG Venugopal agreed that the statements made were grave but said that they won't be affecting the administration. "It is true that scurrilous allegations have been made against the judges of the Supreme Court. The allegations are of a general nature and completely lacking in material particulars. What is more, they appear to have been made with the intent to be provocative," he said.

"I do not believe that any member of the public would take such statements seriously and I am therefore of the opinion that these statements do not substantially affect the administration of justice or lower the authority of the Supreme Court in the public mind," he added.
