20 shanties gutted in Kolkata fire, no casualties

As many as 20 shanties were damaged after a major fire broke out in Kolkata near Topsia area. Six fire tenders immediately rushed into action and no casualties have been reported till now.

Kolkata: Around 20 shanties were completely gutted in a major fire which broke out in the city's Topsia area on Tuesday afternoon, a fire department official said.

At least six fire tenders were pressed into service to control the blaze, which was first spotted around 3.30 pm, he said.

"No one was injured in the fire. Our officers are trying their best to douse the flames," the official added.

"As soon as we received the information, residents were quickly evacuated and fire tenders actively participated in dousing the flames. The damage and losses to properties are being accessed," a fire official said.

"We are compiling a list of affected families, and they will be provided compensation," he added.
