New Jalpaiguri: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) restarted its iconic toy train services from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling on Sunday, after being suspended for over four months due to landslides. The 87-kilometre route had been out of operation since July 5, as landslides damaged tracks between Sukna and Kurseong.Surendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager of Katihar, explained that Darjeeling's geography, combined with heavy rainfall, makes landslides a recurring issue. Efforts are underway to renovate the old tracks and address gradient and other infrastructure challenges.&nbsp;Tourists expressed excitement at the resumption, emphasising the unique experience the toy train offers. "The views, local food, and the journey itself are unmatched. It's a great boost for tourism," said Dhananjay Samal, a tourist from Odisha. Rahul Bhat from Madhya Pradesh added, "I have been waiting to ride the toy train. This is the best way to experience Darjeeling."For international visitors, the train holds historical and cultural significance. Australian tourist Josephine Creswell, whose grandfather served as DHR's general manager a century ago, noted the railway's transformative impact on the region's economy.&nbsp;Built between 1879 and 1881, the DHR earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday promised to remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations and conduct a caste-based survey in the country. “Caste census is the biggest issue before us and we will get it done; it is our central pillar,” Gandhi said at a press conference in Mumbai. Gandhi described the November 20 Maharashtra assembly elections as a battle of ideologies, and a fight between a few billionaires and the poor.The Congress leader said that Rs 7 lakh crore projects including Foxconn and Airbus were shifted to Gujarat from Maharashtra. This led to youth in Maharashtra losing out on jobs, he added. The Maha Vikas Aghadi government will protect the interests of the people of Maharashtra, he said.

Bokaro: Chhau, the traditional dance form of Jharkhand renowned for its vibrant masks, elaborate costumes, and acrobatic moves, is witnessing a resurgence, thanks to efforts by organisations like the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The Chhau Kala Kendra in Chandankyari is at the forefront of this revival, organising workshops to train artists in Chhau dance, mask-making, and playing traditional instruments like the 'Shehnai'."Workshops and training have increased awareness of Chhau among artists," said Kalyan Sinha of Chhau Kala Kendra Chandankyari.&nbsp;Despite this, challenges remain. Veteran strict Parikshit Mahto, a 2024 recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, expressed concerns about the declining popularity and financial hardships. "Earlier, there were many Chhau parties in Jharkhand. Now, there are far fewer," he said.&nbsp;Mahto also highlighted the economic struggles faced by performers, who often lack pensions and funding for essential performance materials.&nbsp;Since the establishment of the Chhau Kala Kendra in 2018, there has been some progress. "The number of Chhau teams has grown from 32 to 38. Artists are now performing in programs outside the region, raising the profile of the Chandankyari Centre," Sinha noted.&nbsp;However, the financial viability of pursuing Chhau as a livelihood remains a significant hurdle. Artists are advocating for government support, similar to West Bengal's LokPrakalpo scheme, which provides pensions to senior folk artists.&nbsp;"We don't receive pensions like in Bengal, but we are hopeful. We want this art form to grow," said Chhau dancer Rajesh Kalindi. (With PTI Inputs)
