Being aware of the incidents of reported deaths due to the “substandard” Indian drugs, especially cough syrups in lower-middle-income countries (LMIC), the Central government has issued a notification for the implementation of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) by the pharmaceutical companies under revised Schedule M of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules.

Cough syrup manufacturers in more than 40 countries underwent quality tests, the CDSCO report said, citing laboratory tests in various states that followed reports linking Indian cough syrups to the deaths of 141 children worldwide.

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and State Licensing Authority (SLA) have issued stop production orders in 40 cases and cancellation and suspension of product licenses in 66 cases after cough-syrups manufactured by different companies found adulterated.
