The Congress slammed the central government on 'one nation, one election' saying that this is good just at the idea level. While talking to ETV Bharat, Senior Supreme Court advocate and senior Congress leader Vivek Tankha said that this cannot be implemented under the present system of parliamentary democracy based on the Westminster model. Ram Nath Kovind panel, which was tasked to explore the necessities and needs of having 'One Nation, One Election' process, recommended several constitutional amendments for the same, while most of which will not need ratification by states. At present, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is responsible for Lok Sabha and assembly polls, while local body polls for municipalities and panchayats are managed by state election commissions. According to the panel, the report is an outcome of extensive consultations with stakeholders, experts and research work of 191 days, since its constitution on September 2, 2023.
