Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has decided to notify Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingala Wildlife Sanctuary as a new tiger reserve on Wednesday. With this, the state will have four tiger reserves.
The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai at CM's official residence, as per the recommendation of the State Wildlife Board and with the consent of the National Tiger Conservation Authority of the Ministry of Forests and Climate Change, Government of India. The Department of Forest and Climate Change has been authorised for initiating steps in this connection.
Spanning over an area of 2829.387 sq km, the new tiger reserve will comprise Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingala Wildlife Sanctuary, covering Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, Korea, Surajpur and Balrampur districts.
The existing three tiger reserves of Chhattisgarh are Indravati Tiger Reserve, Udanti-Sitandi Tiger Reserve and Amankamar Tiger Reserve.
Bringing in a new tiger reserve will give a major boost to eco-tourism and generate scope of employment for the villagers living in the core and buffer areas along with creating better opportunities for guides, tourist vehicles and resort operators.
An additional budget will be available from the National Project Tiger Authority for the new tiger reserve. This fund can be utilised for undertaking new livelihood development works in the villages of the area, officials said.
