Bijapur: Naxalites have killed a 55-year-old man in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on suspicion of being a police informer, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place in Poshadpalli village of Bamanpur panchayat in Bhopalpatnam police station area. Pamphlets of Naxal-backed Maddeh Area Committee were also found near the body.
Body of the victim, identified as Kanhaiya Tati, a resident of Poshadpalli village, was found near a government school of the village. A police team has been deployed in the area.
ASP Chandrakant Gauvarna said, "According to preliminary information, the Naxalites took Tati and killed him with a sharp weapon after accusing him of acting as a police informer."
A search operation has been launched in the area to trace the assailants, police added.
"This is a cowardly act of the Maoists. An innocent villager has been murdered on suspicion of being a police informer," Govarna said.
Police said that action is being taken in Bhopalpatnam police station area. The anti-Naxal operation is achieving a huge success due to which Naxalites are on the backfoot so they are trying to make their presence felt by killing villagers and triggering tension, police added.
According to police, Naxalites have killed 51 people this year in different places of Bastar division that has seven districts including Bijapur.
