6 Killed In Explosion At Firecracker Unit In Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar

Chennai: Six workers were killed on Saturday following an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.

The unit is located in the Bommayapuram area near Sattur in Virudhunagar. The blast is suspected to have taken place during the process of mixing chemicals. The explosion was so severe that it flattened several rooms and led to the deaths, officials said. The fire and rescue department personnel reached the spot and began the rescue operation.

The victims, identified as Velmurugan (54) and Kamaraj (54) from Kurunthamadanthai, Nagaraj (37) from Chettikurichi, Meenatchi Sundaram (46) from Aruppukottai, Sivakumar (56) from Kurunthamadathai, and Kannan (54) from Veerarpatti, were all working in the affected area and died instantly.

More than 80 workers are engaged in the production of firecrackers in the factory. Firefighting teams from Sivakasi and Sattur were immediately dispatched to the scene and worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze.

"The operation is being delayed due to the continuous bursting of firecrackers," an official said. Vachakkarapatti police have registered a case against four people, including factory owners Balaji, Sasi Balan, and manager Das Prakash, under various sections, including recklessly causing death and employing workers without proper safety measures.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh to the injured.

Silimar blast kills two in Odisha

In a similar incident, a couple died in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district after their house collapsed following an explosion when they were making firecrackers. The incident happened in Badabag village in Sadar police station area late on Friday, officials said. The impact of the explosion was such that the roof and walls of the house collapsed, they added.

The deceased couple was identified as Rajesh Das and his wife Rani. Rajesh's younger brother Paresh and his wife Lakshmipriya were injured in the incident, police said.
