New Delhi: Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a letter to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, requested that Minister Atishi be allowed to hoist the national flag on his behalf during the flag-hoisting ceremony on August 15 at the city government's Independence Day function.

"Kejriwal has written to (Lieutenant Governor V K) Saxena from jail saying that Atishi will hoist the tricolour in his place on August 15," the AAP said. Kejriwal is currently in Tihar jail due to corruption and money laundering charges related to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

This request by the Chief Minister comes after a recent ruling by the Delhi High Court, dismissing Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) related to the Excise Policy case. The court in its verdict stated that the arrest was justifiable and advised him to seek further relief from the trial court.

On the occasion of Independence Day, the main function in Delhi is organised at the Red Fort which is attended by the Prime Minister who hoists the flag. Ministers of all the ministries of the central government, service chiefs and other dignitaries also participate in the event.

Earlier Kejriwal addressed the audience at this annual event organised by the Delhi government at the Chhatrasal Stadium after participating in the functions organised at the Red Fort. Last year, while attending the programme, Kejriwal spoke about AAP's vision ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Election.
