CBI arrests 2 NHAI officials among 6 persons in alleged bribery case

General manager of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was arrested in a bribery case involving an amount of Rs 20 lakh in Maharashtra's Nagpur, officials said on Sunday.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested six persons including two National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officers one of whom is General Manager & Project Director in Maharashtra's Nagpur and Deputy General Manager & Project Director posted in Madhya Pradesh's Harda in a case related to alleged bribery of Rs 20 lakh. A cash of Rs 1.10 crore including alleged bribe money has also been recovered so far, the CBI official said on Sunday.

The arrested accused have been identified as Arvind Kale (General Manager & Project Director of NHAI, PIU, Nagpur), Brijesh Kumar Sahu (Deputy General Manager & Project Director), Anil Bansal and Kunal Bansal (both Directors of a private company), C Krishna who was allegedly bribe giver and Chhater Singh Lodhi (employee of a private company).

Searches were being conducted at different offices and residences of accused including Nagpur, Bhopal and Harda. A cash of Rs 1.10 crore including the trap money have been recovered so far alongwith other incriminating documents and digital devices, the CBI claimed in a communique.

The CBI registered a case against four public servants of NHAI, a Bhopal based private company, five private persons including two Directors and employees of the said private company and unknown others on allegations that Directors of a Bhopal based private comoany were delivering bribes to various public servants of NHAI through their employees in lieu of issuance of completion certificates, processing of bills and smooth progression of awarded works in various road projects awarded by NHAI, the central probe agency claimed.

According to the CBI officials, an employee of the private company was allegedly in regular contact with General Manager & Project Director for clearing pending matters including processing of pending bills and issuance of completion certificate for Project Outer Ring Road. It was also alleged that said employees of the private company delivers bribes to the public servants in Nagpur, and in different locations in Madhya Pradesh.

Further, it was alleged that a bribe amount of Rs 25 lakh was likely to be delivered to said GM, it said. The CBI laid a trap and apprehended the accused persons after the delivery of alleged bribe money. Further investigation is underway, it said.
