Chandigarh: In a major crackdown on corruption within the Punjab Police, DGP Gaurav Yadav announced the dismissal of 52 police personnel, ranging from constables to inspectors for their involvement in corrupt practices.

The dismissed officials include one inspector, five assistant sub-inspectors, four head constables and 42 constables across various districts. The move is part of a broader initiative by the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government to root out corruption in the police force and restore public trust in law enforcement.

"In line with the instructions issued by the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who emphasises transparency, accountability and integrity in public service, the Commissioners of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police (CPs/SSPs) of all districts have dismissed 52 police personnel for corrupt activities, misconduct, criminal activities and long-term absence," Yadav said.

Yadav further said that the CPs/SSPs of their respective districts and commissionerates are identifying cases in which police officers are wanted in FIRs. The police officials are facing serious charges or are found involved in corrupt activities. He said that the concerned officers are scrutinising the evidence and following appropriate procedures to initiate action in each case. He said that recently, a Station House Officer (SHO) and two constables of Thada Sadiq in Faridkot district have been arrested on charges of being involved in extortion.

Affirming the Punjab Police’s commitment to a ‘zero tolerance policy’ against corruption, the DGP said that anyone found involved in corruption will be dealt with strictly. He asserted, "Black sheep will not be tolerated in Punjab Police and strict action will be taken as per the law.”

Punjab Police to launch e-FIR facility

Sharing details about the upcoming projects of the Punjab Police, Yadav said that the Punjab Police are all set to launch an e-FIR facility to tackle motor vehicle theft. Through the app, people will be able to register FIRs regarding vehicle theft by visiting online platforms or Saanjh Kendras. The DGP said that an e-police station is also being set up in the state to fulfil this objective. He said, “We will also request the Hon’ble High Court through the state government to notify e-courts in every district.”

He said that the e-FIR project aims to reduce the direct contact of the public with the police and provide citizen-friendly services using technology. He added that even at present, Punjab Police are providing 43 police services online under the Saanjh project. He further said that Punjab Police launched a project on internal police reforms in collaboration with the Indian Police Foundation, making Punjab the first state to launch such a project. This project, which was earlier launched in SAS Nagar and Rupnagar, is now being rolled out in two more districts including Fatehgarh Sahib and Khanna.

He said that these important initiatives focus on improving complaint/FIR registration, improving police response, behaviour and conduct, reducing harassment, citizen services and community engagement.
