Kolkata: India rode on swashbuckling opener Abhishek Sharma's explosive fifty and Arshdeep Singh's record-breaking spell to beat England by 8 wickets and 43 balls in the first T20I of the five-match series at the iconic Eden Gardens on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This is India's biggest win over England int terms of ball remaining in the match.

Abhishek Sharma smashed 79 off just 34 balls, striking at a 232.35. His innings included 8 sixes and 5 fours. Arshdeep Singh then picked up two wickets and conceded only 17 runs in his 3-over spell. With this two-wicket haul, Arshdeep became India's most successful bowler in the T20I format, surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal's tally of 96 wickets. Arshdeep now has 97 wickets in 61 innings. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was completely 'at home', starring with figures of 3/23 as India delivered an exceptional bowling display, skittling out England for 132.

Chasing a paltry 133 for a win, India overhauled the target with 43 balls to spare as they reached 133 for 3 in just 12.5 overs. Abhishek made England pay for a dropped catch as he hit five fours and eight sixes during his hurricane 34-ball innings. His opening partner Sanju Samson made 26 off 20 balls, followed by skipper Suryakumar Yadav who got dismissed in Jofra Archer's same over.

It felt that England might have a chance to put pressure back on the Indian lineup, but it didn't happen. Tilak Verma came out with intention and went for big shot on the first ball he faced in the innings, luckily it took the outside edge and raced away to the boundary. However, he didn't look in a perfect touch as he remained unbeaten on 19 off 16 balls that included 3 fours.

Overall, it was only Abhishek Sharma's show. He didn't let the bowler settle down and bowl at one spot regularly. In the process, he gave some chances, but England were very sloppy on the field as they failed to convert half chances into the wicket. Apart from Archer, everyone leaked runs with Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, and Jamie Overton recording economy rates of 19, 13.50 and 10 respectively.

The biggest surprise of the evening was the omission of a seemingly fit Mohammed Shami from the playing XI, as the Gautam Gambhir-led team opted for a spin-heavy attack. This decision paid off, with the spinners combining for impressive figures of 5 for 67 in 12 overs.

India fielded three spinners: Ravi Bishnoi (0/23 in 4 overs), Axar Patel (2/22 in 4 overs), and Chakravarthy, supporting Arshdeep Singh's fiery opening spell, which saw him take 2 wickets for 17 runs. England's total of 132 was below par at a venue with an average first-innings score of 198.

Jos Buttler fought valiantly with 68 runs off 44 balls, but the Indian spinners, particularly Chakravarthy, turned the game. England struggled with partnerships and suffered from poor shot selection, resulting in their all-out score. Ultimately, they fell short of a competitive total and bowled out on the last delivery.
