Srinagar: Uber India has introduced Country's first water transport service, offering tourists the convenience of booking shikara rides on Dal Lake in Srinagar via its app. The service, called 'Uber Shikara', is aimed to boost tourism and provide economic support to local shikara operators.

"At Uber, our focus is on making mobility seamless and enjoyable. With Uber Shikara, we've combined technology and tradition to create a unique experience for travelers. This service not only uplifts tourism but also empowers local shikara drivers in the picturesque landscape of Kashmir," Uber's spokesperson said.

The initiative marks Uber's first venture into water transport in India and Asia. The company has similar services in select European cities, such as Venice, Italy, where water taxis are popular.

Uber has initially onboarded seven shikara operators, with plans to expand the fleet depending on demand. Rides are priced according to government-regulated rates, and Uber has waived its service fees, ensuring operators receive the full fare.

The company announced the service on X, formerly known as Twitter, posting, “Introducing Uber Shikara in Srinagar! The perfect blend of tradition and tech! Book your serene Shikara ride up to 15 days in advance. With just a tap on the Uber app, you’re ready to set sail. Experience Dal Lake like never before.” The post also featured images of shikaras gliding through Dal Lake’s tranquil waters.

According to the spokesperson, Uber Shikara rides operate daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Each trip accommodates up to four passengers and lasts one hour. Travelers can book rides 12 hours to 15 days in advance, starting from Shikara Ghat No. 16.

Wali Mohammad Bhat, president of the Shikara Owners Association Kashmir, praised the service for its potential to streamline operations. "Dal Lake has nearly 4,000 shikaras. Uber's platform ensures fixed pricing, which eliminates the need for bargaining and provides a hassle-free experience for tourists. We hope more shikara operators will join this initiative soon," Bhat said.

As per the company, to book an Uber Shikara ride, start by ensuring you have the latest version of the Uber app. Visit the App Store or Play Store to update the app if necessary.

"Once the app is ready, open it and enter 'Shikara Ghat No. 16' as both the starting and ending point in the 'Where to' section. Next, select the "Uber Shikara" option from the available ride choices. Then, pick your preferred time and date for the ride," the company said.

"After choosing the time and date, confirm the pick-up location at Ghat No. 16. Finally, click the Book button, and your serene shikara ride on Dal Lake will be secured."

Shikaras are boats made of wood and are abundantly found ferrying tourists in famous Dal Lake in Srinagar and other water bodies. Shikaras are of different sizes depending on their purpose and utility including transportation.
