A bill to amend the law governing Waqf boards is likely to be tabled in Parliament today. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill aims to rename the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995. The Bill has proposed far-reaching changes in the present Act, including ensuring the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies.
Today (August 7) is the 13th day of the current Monsoon Session of Parliament which began July 22 and is scheduled to end on August 12, if not adjourned sine die.

Middle Class benefitted From Various tax proposals in budgets Under Modi government
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha said without drastically increasing taxes, her government has brought in a simplified taxation regime and eased compliance.
"The middle class benefitted from various tax proposals in budgets under the Narendra Modi government. Effective tax on annual income of Rs 15 lakh was reduced to 10 per cent in 2023 and further reduced this year as well under the new I-T regime. Pending litigation and demands are sorted under 'Vivad se Vishwas scheme', we helped the middle class and small businesses," she said.
She also said that increasing the LTCG tax exemption limit to Rs 1.25 lakh from Rs 1 lakh to help the middle class invest in the stock market. "Customs duty cut on labour-intensive leather and textile sectors has been done to promote trade and employment," added Sitharaman.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P T Usha on the issue of disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat.
"It was necessary that Vinesh Phogat weighed 50 kg as per the UWW rules. The Indian Olympic Association has registered a protest against in this regard. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to PT Usha," Mandaviya said in the Lower House of the Parliament amid ruckus by Opposition members.
Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc walked out after the statement of the Sports Minister in regard to the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat. Opposition had asked for clarification and when not given, opposition protested and staged a walk out from Lok Sabha.

The bill to amend the law governing Waqf boards was circulated among Lok Sabha members on Tuesday night ahead of its likely introduction in the Parliament today. According to its statement of objects and reasons, the bill seeks to omit Section 40 of the current law relating to the powers of the board to decide if a property is Waqf property. It provides for a broad-based composition of the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Boards and ensures the representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in such bodies. The bill also proposes the establishment of a separate Board of Auqaf for the Boharas and Aghakhanis. The draft law provides for the representation of Shias, Sunnis, Bohras, Agakhanis and other backward classes among Muslim communities.
The bill also aims to clearly define "'Waqf' as Waqf by any person practising Islam for at least five years and having ownership of such property". One of its objectives is streamlining the manner of registration of Waqfs through a central portal and database. A detailed procedure is established for mutation as per revenue laws with due notice to all concerned before recording any property as a Waqf property. The Wakf Act, 1995, was brought to regulate 'Auqaf' (assets donated and notified as Waqf) by a 'wakif' (the person who dedicates a property for any purpose recognised by Muslim law as religious or charitable). The Act was last amended in 2013.
