Lucknow Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises To Eight; 28 Injured

The death toll in the building collapse in the Transport Nagar area here on Saturday evening hiked to eight, with rescuers pulling out three more bodies from the debris, officials said on Sunday. As many as 28 people were injured when the three-storey building housing godowns and a motor workshop collapsed.

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): The death toll in the Lucknow building collapse rose to eight after rescuers recovered three more bodies from the debris on Sunday morning. As many as 28 people, who have been injured in the incident have been admitted to three hospitals located under Krishna Nagar Police Station for treatment.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the bodies of Raj Kishore (27), Rudra Yadav (24), and Jagrup Singh (35) during the rescue operation, according to Relief Commissioner G S Naveen.

"Since the start of our rescue operation, eight people have been reported dead so far and they have been sent to medical institutes for further investigation. 28 people were injured and are also getting proper treatment. We are hoping that we have rescued all the people. We will complete the rescue operation in the next 5-6 hours and will also secure the surrounding buildings," said Deputy Commissioner of Police RN Singh.

The Harmilap Building collapsed in the Transport Nagar area at around 5 PM on Saturday, officials said. Officials said that the building had a motor workshop and warehouse on the ground floor, a medical godown on the first floor and a cutlery warehouse on the second floor. It was constructed around four years ago, police said.

Senior police and administrative officials are on the spot to oversee the ongoing rescue operations. "Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF have been deployed to the scene and are working to extricate the trapped individuals," said the Relief Commissioner.

Defence Minister and MP from Lucknow Rajnath Singh expressed grief regarding the incident. In a post on X, Rajnath said, "The news of the accident caused by the collapse of a building in Lucknow is harrowing. I have spoken to the District Magistrate of Lucknow over the phone and got information about the situation at the spot. The local administration is carrying out relief and rescue operations on the spot and is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way."

In another post on X, Rajnath added his deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their loved ones in this accident. He wrote, "I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured."

In a post on X, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the CM has directed the district administration officials, SDRF, and NDRF teams to reach the site and expedite the relief work, ensuring that the injured are immediately taken to the hospital for proper treatment.

CM Adityanath too, took to X and condoled the deaths, terming the incident as heartbreaking. "My condolences are with the grieving families of the deceased. Instructions have been given to the concerned officials to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing and provide proper treatment to the injured. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to give a place to the departed souls in his feet and provide speedy recovery to the injured," he wrote in the post.
