New Delhi: A 45-year-old Delhi man, who lost his hands in a train accident in 2020, got his hands back after receiving donor hands here. A 61-year-old woman, who was suffering from a brain haemorrhage gave life to a total of three people after donating her organs.

He is the first patient in Delhi to have undergone a bilateral hand transplant and witnessed the "miracle" first-hand. Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala, who performed the patient's transplant, said the man's hands were amputated in a train accident. Doctors at Delhi's Ganga Ram Hospital have succeeded in transplanting both hands donated by an elderly woman.

The hospital claims that this is a first-hand transplant operation in the national capital and is the first organ donation from North India. Several doctors including Dr. Mahesh Mangal and Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala of the plastic surgery department of the hospital, performed surgery for about 12 hours and joined both the hands of the youth.

Doctor Nikhil Jhanjhunwala said," After the surgery, there is a lot of improvement in the hands of the man. It is also possible to use the elbow. It also includes other improvements. Blood circulation is happening properly in the hand."

'In the train accident, the man was amputated above the thumb of one hand and slightly below the thumb of the other hand. In the hospital where the victim was treated, both the hands were closed from below after surgery. "We performed surgery and joined both the hands from below the closed area," he said.

According to Doctor Mahesh Mangal, transplanting both hands was helpful. "The arms found were extended above the elbow of the donor and attached to the youth. Hand knots, arteries and stones were connected one by one. The surgery was successful and now the patient is being discharged from the hospital at 11 am on Thursday. The patient's family is coming to receive him tomorrow."

According to the hospital administration, an elderly woman living in Delhi was admitted to the hospital due to a brain haemorrhage. She died during treatment. After this, it was decided to donate her organs.

As per the data available with NOTTO, in 2022, 11 cadaver donations were made with the successful retrieval of 30 organs in Delhi. Due to a lack of awareness and misconceptions, there is a shortage of organ donors, and with each passing year, the gap between the number of organs donated and the number of people waiting for transplants is growing wider. Timely cadaveric organ donation can save many lives and more people would come forth and pledge their organs if they receive more information and are educated on the benefits of organ donation.
