SC dismisses Waseem Rizvi plea seeking removal of 26 verses from Quran
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by former Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board chairman Syed Waseem Rizvi seeking removal of 26 verses from the Holy Quran that are allegedly violating the law of the land and promote extremism. The Court has also imposed Rs 50,000 as costs on the petitioner for filing the petition. Meanwhile, Islamic religious leaders hailed the decision of the top court saying that the constitution does not allow anyone to intervene in any religious text. Rizvi, in his PIL, alleged that the 26 verses "promote violence", and were not part of the original Quran, but were added in later revisions, and should hence be removed from the holy book.
