If you are planning a baby and you notice spotting or bleeding, then don’t panic, it may be a sign of awaiting good news. One of the most common symptoms of early pregnancy is bleeding. Many expecting women experience, what is known as Implantation Bleeding.

You might have many questions like how do I know this is implantation bleeding or how much do you bleed during implantation or what are the first signs or how does this bleeding look like, Dr. Manjula explains, “Implantation bleeding is typically a small amount of light spotting or bleeding that occurs about 7 - 10 days after conception and it is absolutely normal. Implantation bleeding happens when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus”.

Is implantation bleeding common among people who are planning a kid?

Yes, implantation bleeding is very common and is a normal symptom of pregnancy. Around 1/3 of pregnant women experience implantation bleeding. In many cases, it is one of the first signs of pregnancy.

When does implantation bleeding happen and how long?

It usually happens seven to 10 days following ovulation. Spotting should only last a few hours or up to three days,

What is the difference between normal periods and implantation bleeding?

Your period starts off light and gets heavier and may be associated with clots.

It lasts for around 3-7 days and the color is fresh bright red and the pain can be intense.

Whereas implantation bleeding starts off light and remains light. It doesn't fill up an entire pad or tampon. The color ranges from light pink to brown or black blood, although red blood can occasionally occur. Implantation bleeding can come and go or you may see some spotting for a few hours or on and off for 1-3 days and the cramps are usually mild.

How long does it last?

It usually lasts for 1 to 3 days.

Do you see this in normal conception as well as assisted reproduction?

Yes, it can happen in normal conception as well as assisted reproduction. In assisted reproduction, once the embryo is formed in the lab, it is transferred into the uterus. When it is attached to the lining of the uterus, bleeding can occur.

When to go for medical advice and what is advised in this scenario?

If you suspect you may be pregnant and experience heavy bleeding or clotting, you should get medical advice as it could signal a problem or even an early miscarriage. On the other hand, if you have no other reason to suspect that you’re pregnant, this type of bleeding is much more likely to be simply the start of your period.
