Although the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided currently and our lives are getting back on track, people are returning back to their offices and kids to schools, but continuous exposure to screens that include smartphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, etc. remains still. This is the reason why many people are experiencing vision problems, dry eyes as well as dark circles.
Since most of the work, right from office meetings to schools, are now virtual, screens have become unavoidable. And even though you are on-screen with others or in person, you are expected to look presentable, but dark circles can make you look sleep-deprived, ill and tired. Therefore, here are a few ways in which you can avoid dark circles, but first let us understand what causes dark circles.
What Causes Dark Circles?
Dark circles around the eyes are a type of pigmentation, purple, blue, dark brown, or black in colour, formed in the muscles around the eyes called orbicularis oculi. Since the skin around the eyes is very thin, the pigmentationin the orbicularis oculi begins to appear on the upper skin as well. Apart from this, the light emitted from the screen of the mobile or laptop also affects the moisture of the skin around the eyes, which causes the eyes to look swollen, dry, and dark in color.
An Indore-based beauty and make-up expert Savita Sharma says that since after the beginning of the pandemic and till now, she has been receiving numerous calls from her clients, complaining about dark circles. “Dark circles can affect a person’s personality and lower their self-confidence while facing the public”. Therefore, here are some tips on how to reduce dark circles naturally, when you cannot compromise with the screen time.
What Is The Solution?
Savita Sharma explains that this problem can be resolved with the help of a proper skincare routine and a nutritious diet. It is important for people having dark circles to include nutritious foods, especially those containing vitamin C and E in their diet. Apart from this, yoga and facial massage are also very beneficial. Some other things that you can follow are:
- Get adequate sleep and follow proper sleep hygiene.
- Take frequent breaks while using digital devices to reduce glare and keep the brightness low.
- There should be at least one hand gap between the screen and the eyes.
- Apply cream under the eyes 40 minutes before going to sleep and massage with light hands.
- Keeping cold green tea bags, potatoslices, and cotton balls soaked in rose water over closed eyes help release the tension in the blood vessels around the eyes. This further reduces the dark circles and makes our eyes feel fresh.
- Close your eyes and gently pat the skin around it and the eyebrows.
- You can also ask a doctor to prescribe eye-relaxing eye drops.
Besides this, take frequent breaks from continuously staring at the screen. In these breaks, you can also perform some eye exercises, like eye rotation, side-to-side eye movement, etc.
