Hyderabad: Communication is the key to a healthy relationship. In these modern times, where both husband and wife are working, the work-life is becoming a barrier in communication. But now that everyone is working from home, how can this be resolved? Dr Prashant Kocherlakota, MD PhD. Consultant Psychopathologist, Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad says, “It is important that both husband and wife have a shared goal. Since both are now working, they don’t get to communicate with each other as much. But, during this lockdown, it can all be resolved”.

Here are some tips suggested by Dr Prashant for a happier life:

Spend Some Time Together

It is necessary to spend at least some time together, be it just 15 mins or an hour. You can play some games like ludo, antakshari with your family. Spending quality time is important. It brings everyone together.

Divide the Work

It’s not only the women who are responsible for the household chores. Men too should participate in the work. The work can be divided equally so that the female of the house is not loaded with household chores after returning from work. This brings harmony in the home.

Listening is The Key

In every relationship, it is very important to listen to the other person. Be it your husband, wife or your children, talk to them and listen to what they have to say. Have patience, don’t just shut them out. Sometimes people come up with their own solutions while you listen to them.

Have a Routine

Follow a proper routine every day. Make sure there is sufficient time for everything during the day. If you miss out on something, try to make time for it as well.

Exercise Daily

Exercising every day helps in keeping the mind and body relaxed and refreshed. Take out some time for exercising every day. It need not be hours, but just 15 mins are sufficient. Since now you cannot go out for a walk, try skipping rope at home, practise yoga or some basic stretching exercises. A fit body is the key to a fit mind.

Do it Together

Involve your spouse and your kids in doing several activities throughout the day together. Since we are now working from home, have your meals together at fixed times. Exercise together and try something new. Learn novel things from each other. Indulge into some activities like watching a movie together, playing games like ludo, snakes and ladder, etc. or even cooking together.

Meditation is Necessary

Meditation is very necessary for a stable mind and relaxation. It is not necessary to sit for long hours for meditating. Start with 5 mins of meditation and increase the duration with time. Learn online, how to meditate or you can also try reciting the numbers 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Think Before You Say

Whatever you say to your partner, think before you say it. Think of whatever you are saying is a reflection of who you are as a human being. Understand that your mood can affect the mindset of others in the family as well. Your abusiveness, aggressiveness or short temperedness can lead to family disputes.

Because of busy schedules and lack of time in the corporate world, marriages are being taken for granted and kids are being ignored. Therefore, it is now time to understand the importance of communication in a relationship and solving out the marital discords.
