Jalpaiguri: In place of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), sand was found in a cylinder supplied to a beneficiary under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal.

Ramesh Roy, a resident of Kayetgoch village in Rajganj area of the district had received a LPG cylinder under the PMUY scheme 12 days ago.

By Friday last, the gas started depleting from the cylinder and eventually stopped coming to the burner.

To his surprise, Roy found that though nothing was coming out of the cylinder worth igniting, yet it was heavy weighted.

“It was pretty surprising that though nothing was coming out of the cylinder, yet it was heavy. When I weighed, it showed 21 kgs, though a vacant cylinder should be weighing around 15 kgs. Then I called some of my neighbours and in the presence of all, we opened the nozzle of the cylinder and found 6 kgs of sand. We were surprised. I have informed the distributor,” said Roy

The delivery person of LPG cylinder said, “My job is to deliver LPG cylinders to households. I don't know how the sand came in one cylinder.”

The distributor of LPG cylinders in Rajganj assured that the matter is being investigated.
