Kolkata: Veteran atomic scientist and the man behind India's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant, Dr Sekhar Basu passed away on Thursday in Kolkata.
A few days before he was tested positive for COVID-19. He was 68.
"Dr Basu was suffering from COVID-19 and other kidney ailments. He died at 4.50 am," the official said.
A mechanical engineer, Dr Basu is revered for his contributions to the country's atomic energy programme. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2014.
Dr Basu was a mechanical engineer who has already spent four decades in India's atomic energy program.
His key contribution to the nation, the INS Arihant, is powered by a nuclear reactor of less than 100 MW and is fuelled using enriched uranium.
