Two Red Pandas bid adieu to Darjeeling Zoo

Two Red Pandas at the Darjeeling zoo in West Bengal bid adieu to their fellow zoo mates before they embark on a journey to Berlin, Germany. As part of the exchange programme with the German zoo, five Mishmi takins arrived in Darjeeling last month.

The female and male Panda, who are on their way to Kolkata and later on the plane from Darjeeling this month, will be on view at Tierpark, Germany, until March 6.

According to reports, the panda's are being sent to Germany for breeding purposes. Earlier, Red Panda's were sent to a similar facility in Auckland, New Zealand for breeding.

As part of the exchange programme with the German zoo, five Mishmi takins, aged between seven months and three years, arrived in Darjeeling zoo last month. Takin, which is the national animal of Bhutan, is an endangered goat-antelope species.

Besides, the Darjeeling Zoo also plans to bring more Red Panda from abroad to bring the heterogeneous diversity to Darjeeling Zoo.

The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), popularly known as Darjeeling Zoo, is a specialized zoo known for its conservation and breeding programmes of Red Panda, Snow Leopards, Tibetan Wolf and highly endangered animal species of eastern Himalayas. It houses animals of 49 species.

Darjeeling zoo is also a member of ZIMS (zoological information management system), which is a trustee organisation for conservation of animals from the Asian region.

The inhabitants of the zoo ranges from mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds.
