Kolkata:Trinamool Congress registered landslide victories in four municipal corporations namelyAsansol Municipal Corporation, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Chandernagore Municipal Corporation, and the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the elections for which were conducted onFebruary 12, 2022.
In terms of the overall percentage of vote share combining all the four municipal corporations the Left Front, which scored a zero in the state assembly elections last year finished second, followed by BJP and Congress in the third and four positions respectively. However, as far as individual vote percentage share for four municipalities, the Left Front was in the second position in Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and Chandernagore Municipal Corporation, while BJP was in the second position in Asansol Municipal Corporation and Siliguri Municipal Corporation.
Of the 106 wards under Asansol Municipal Corporation, Trinamool Congress bagged victory in 91 wards, followed by BJP at 7, Congress and independents at 3 each, and Left Front at two.
Of the 41 wards under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, Trinamool Congress candidates were winners from 39 wards, followed by Congress and independents at one each. Neither BJP nor Left Front was able to open their books in this municipal corporation area.
Polls were held last Saturday for 31 wards of Chandernagore municipal corporations, out of which Trinamool Congress bagged victories from 31 wards, while Left Front has to remain satisfied by winning from just one ward.
In Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the last citadel of Left Front so far in the state, elections were conducted for 47 wards. Trinamool Congress, the state’s ruling party, had a landslide victory in the polls by bagging victory in 37 out of 47 wards of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. BJP emerged as the runner up winning from five wards, followed by CPI(M) at four and Congress at one.
Congratulating the voters for the Trinamool Congress' (TMC) thumping victory in the four municipal corporations, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday described it as an "overwhelming victory of Ma, Mati, Manush (Mother, Soil and the People)."
