TMC MLA expresses inability to contest polls

TMC MLA Rabiranjan Chattopadhyay wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about his decision and expressed gratitude for giving him the opportunity to serve for two consecutive terms.

Burdwan: Amid the ongoing exits from the party, TMC MLA from Bardhaman Dakhin Rabiranjan Chattopadhyay on Wednesday said he will not contest the upcoming assembly elections due to his age and health issues. He also sent a letter regarding this to the party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

According to a source, Chattopadhyay wrote, in his letter to the Chief Minister, "I don't like politics anymore. Moreover, I am also growing old. Therefore, I do not want to contest the upcoming assembly elections."

The veteran leader is also a former minister for the departments of Technical Education & Training and Science & Technology & Biotechnology.

Meanwhile, former police chief Humayun Kabir joined TMC at a public meeting in Kalna on Tuesday.

Speculations are rife that he might be considered for the Burdwan South Assembly constituency.

It may be noted here that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the soil festival in Burdwan on Tuesday, after which she met the local MLAs but Rabiranjan Chatterjee was absent.

The tenure of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal will come to an end on May 30, 2020. The upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal are slated to take place in April-May for 294 seats.
