Kolkata: A public interest litigation has been filed in the Calcutta High Court demanding to suspend BJP's upcoming rath yatra programme in the state.
The case has been filed by High Court lawyer Rama Prasad Sarkar. The lawyer claimed that allowing the procession in the Corona pandemic situation could create more problems. Besides, this rath yatra can cause chaos in public life and may spread communal violence.
With Assembly elections barely three months away, BJP has sought the state government's nod for the rath yatra, which is perceived as a precursor to the party's political campaign intensifying in Bengal.
Lawyer Rama Prasad Sarkar said, ‘‘If this rath yatra program is permitted in 294 centres, the law and order situation in the state may break. As well as the corona situation in the state could be even worse. Assembly elections are coming and election dates will be announced on any day.

In this situation, the law and order situation in the state may break down. That is why the court should immediately order the closure of this program. Earlier in 2018, the Bharatiya Janata Party had sought permission from the court to carry out the program But the court dismissed that plea too."
