Kolkata police rope in IIT-Kharagpur researchers for better traffic management

Experts and researchers of Kharagpur IIT will specially train Officer-in-Charges and Assistant Commissioners, along with sergeants of Traffic Department of Kolkata Police, to properly implement modern concepts on road safety.

Kolkata: The police headquarters at Lalbazar is all set to take help from IIT-Kharagpur to manage the city traffic in a better way. It is learnt that experts and researchers of Kharagpur IIT will specially train officer-in-charges and assistant commissioners, along with sergeants of the Traffic Department of Kolkata police, to properly implement modern concepts on road safety. IIT-Kharagpur has already organised a programme in collaboration with the Transport Department. Some of the Kolkata Traffic police personnel will participate in the event.

According to Lalbazar sources, 200 traffic police will participate in the event related to road safety. Various aspects related to the safety of people on city streets will be taught to the police officers in the event. The programme includes training in blackspot detection, road junction safety, safety of vulnerable road users, safe handling of procedures as well as four-wheeler or two-wheeler speed control. It is believed that after the training, the police will be able to work in a better way to serve the people.

An event was organised at Kolkata Police Training School, in which the Director of IIT-Kharagpur VK Tiwari participated virtually. While several experts from Kharagpur were present. The special training will be conducted in a total of four phases. Training will be provided online and offline. In the first two phases, training will be imparted to Assistant Police Commissioners and Additional OCs. It may be noted that the Kolkata Traffic Police took various measures to prevent accidents in the city. Recently, the city police headquarters had ordered that route boards could not be placed on the windscreen of private buses. This causes inconvenience to the driver.

As a result, the chances of multiple accidents on the road increase. Due to this, the bus owners have been instructed by the Kolkata police to remove the boards. A fine of Rs 500 is being imposed for disobeying the order. In case of repeated violations, a fine of Rs 1,000 will also be imposed. Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Bhargava Maitra, said, "IIT Kharagpur is working with the Kolkata police to curb road accidents. Keeping in mind the role and responsibilities of the Kolkata Traffic Police officers, this training has been organised in Kolkata."

IIT-Kharagpur extends a helping hand in various areas related to road safety in the state. This includes vehicle speed management, emergency response, enforcement, new techniques of congestion control and modern traffic control systems. The city's speed management policy and roadmap have been developed by IIT-Kharagpur.
