Kolkata:Are the links of Naziyur Rahman, Rabiul Islam and Seikh Sabir, the three suspected terrorists nabbed from the southern fringes of Kolkata, limited only to Bangladesh-based Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) or their networks are extended to more and much bigger international groups? This is the question that is keeping the investigating sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) engaged.

“Everything is currently at the preliminary stage of the investigation. As the proving process is going along we are getting clues that besides JMB, the trio arrested from Kolkata had contacts with several old and new terrorist organizations and their leaders. The nature of operations of the trio has similarities with the functioning style of the JMB. Recently the sleuths of NIA discussed with their counterparts in Bangladesh. They shared the substance of the discussion with us. The discussion summarised that currently in Bangladesh there are other smaller or bigger terror groups other than JMB. Again JMB has two factions like the original JMB and neo-JMB. We all suspect the trio has cross-connections with leaders of these multiple groups and factions,” a probe official of the Kolkata Police told ETV Bharat.

According to him, currently, there has been an attempt to unite all the bigger and smaller terrorist groups in Bangladesh under one umbrella organization. Some of these groups are Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HUJI), JMB (both new and old factions) and Ansarullah Group among others. “The NIA sleuths are in regular interaction with their counterparts in Bangladesh. They were informed that some most wanted terrorists associated with the big global terrorist groups are currently engaged in the work of uniting the different terror outfits in Bangladesh under one umbrella organization. So the trio, that our STF sleuths arrested from the southern outskirts of Kolkata, does not necessarily have links limited to JMB. At least that has come out from the initial probe and integration of the trio. Although the STF is probing the matter from the forefront, the NIA sleuths are keeping a close watch on the matter, ” a city police official said.

The investigating sleuths have further learnt that Naziyur Rahman, one of the three arrested terror suspects, has close links with Faruk Ahmed, one of the prime accused in the Khagragarh Blast in 2014. NIA might integrate them virtually soon. “From this connection, we suspect that Naziyur Rahman could have some links with that blast also,” the probe official said.
