West Bengal: FCI godown goes up in flames, no casualty

As many as 23 fire tenders deployed to douse the fire happened at Garden Reach in the southern outskirts of Kolkata on Saturday morning.

Kolkata:A major fire broke out at a godown of Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Garden Reach in the southern outskirts of Kolkata on Saturday morning.

According to sources, the fire had spread to an adjacent godown because of high wind. A total of 23 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire.

A huge police contingent reached the spot and vacated the place to avert any loss of life or injury. However, there are no reports of casualties as of now.

"The area was congested and so the fire started spreading to some of the adjacent shanties. However, the firefighters were able to restrict the fire within the main godown. While the firemen were trying to extinguish the fire they heard another blast from within the godown," said sources.

Police sources said that the fire broke out around 10am. Immediately the fire services department was informed. Ten fire tenders immediately rushed to the spot while 13 other fire tenders joined in phases.

Meanwhile, the firefighters are facing difficulty in restricting the fire within a particular area, because of the heavy wind blowing on the river Ganges beside the godown in the Garden Reach area.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be the inflammable items stocked in the godown.
