East West Metro Corridor will be completed by 2021, says Rail Minister Piyush Goyal

Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State Babul Supriyo inaugurated the first underground station in the East-West Metro Corridor - Phulbagan - online on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, Goyal said that the East-West Metro Corridor will be completed by 2021.

Kolkata:The first underground station in the East-West Metro Corridor - Phulbagan - was inaugurated on Sunday. However, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Minister of State Babul Supriyo inaugurated the station online due to Coronavirus situation. Kolkata got an underground metro station again after 25 years. The station will be launched commercially on Monday. As soon as Minister Piyush Goyal flagged off the project, the inaugural rack started from Phulbagan station.

'If the work continues smoothly, the East-West Metro Rail will run beneath the Hooghly River within the next year,' Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said at the inauguration.

Minister Piyush Goyal said, "The work from Salt Lake Sector Five to Howrah Maidan will be completed by December 2021. If the work continues smoothly, the country's first Metro Rail will run down the Hooghly River by the end of 2021. By 2035, more than one million people will be on the East-West Metro. It will be of great benefit to the people of the city. The work of this project has not been easy at all. But all those who have been involved in this work have worked tirelessly."
