New Delhi: As the West Bengal Assembly polls are just around the corner, talks between Congress and Left parties are underway for contesting elections in the alliance. However, Congress high command is yet to take a final call over the matter.

On Tuesday, Congress and Left met in Kolkata to discuss on wider dissemination of their alliance so that the people of Bengal can have an alternative apart from Bharatiya Janta Party and Trinamool Congress even at the booth level.

"Yes, talks are going on. We had jointly contested elections even before. We had an understanding during Lok Sabha elections as well. Whatever be in favour of the people of Bengal, we will do that," said a senior leader of Congress party.

According to the sources, the Congress state unit has already agreed to contest elections with Left, but the final decision is yet to be taken by the party high command.

The Congress-Left Alliance is also planning to jointly organize programmes in every block of the state from November 23. After facing a debacle in Bihar polls, Congress is also being cautious about All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM). The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and Congress chalked out a detailed plan to reach out to the minority community in West Bengal.

When asked about the matter, a Congress leader said that by contesting elections, AIMIM helps BJP and the same has been witnessed during Bihar polls. In view of this, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary and state leader of opposition Abdul Mannan met Muslim religious leader Toha Siddique to urge him to stand with secular forces.
