Raiganj: Fresh tension is simmering in Kaliaganj over BJP's allegation of BJP MP Debashree Chowdhury that party leaders and members were not allowed to get a glimpse of the body of Mrutyunjay Barman, who was allegedly killed by cops on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

Kaliaganj has been on the boil over the past few days and the administration has clamped Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC and enforced an internet shutdown.

Chowdhury said Mrutyunjay Barman, brother of Kaliaganj Panchayat Samiti member Bishnu Barman, was shot dead by the police. Later, BJP leaders were denied entry into the Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital morgue where Barman's body was kept.

Earlier in the day, Suvendu Adhikari in a tweet also accused cops of killing Mrityunjay Barman. Adhikari accused the state police of working at the behest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sources said Debashree entered into an argument with the police after she was obstructed. BJP leaders alleged that police went to Chandgaon village under Kaliaganj police station on Wednesday night. Cops raided the house of Bishnu Burman, who was absent from his home. According to the BJP, cops took Bishnu's father, sister, and son-in-law into the car which was stopped by Bishnu's brother Mrityunjay. The police shot dead Mrityunjay, who died on the spot after the bullet hit his chest.

The incident sparked fresh tension in the area. Debashree Chowdhury and BJP's Uttar Dinajpur District President Basudeb Sarkar rushed to the hospital morgue where they were allegedly obstructed. Chowdhury further alleged that following the instructions of the chief minister, the police "embarked on a mission to eliminate BJP workers."
