BJP convoy attacked in Bengal; Himanta B Sarma, Dilip Ghosh escape unhurt

West Bengal: The convoys of Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bengal unit president Dilip Ghosh was allegedly attacked by supporters of ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Bengal’s East Midnapore district on Tuesday evening.

While the two leaders escaped unhurt, their vehicles were reportedly vandalised.

The incident took place when the duo was on a visit to Khejuri in Contai Lok Sabha constituency around 7 pm where the BJP leaders had gone to campaign in favour of the party’s candidate Debasish Samanta.

Soon after the attack, Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his twitter account and blamed TMC for the attack and criticised the West Bengal police for their incompetency in controlling the violence.

In a series of tweets, Sharma also tweeted pictures of the convoy being vandalised.

He also alleged that three of BJP's workers had been held captive by TMC workers in their union office of Khejuri.

Bengal has witnessed several instances of violence between the two cadre-based parties- BJP and TMC- during the ongoing general election 2019.

The TMC and BJP are locked in a bitter electoral battle with the latter targeting to win at least 22-23 seats in the state that has 42 constituencies.
