WB: SSKM performs complex brain surgery, saves life of 5-yr-old

West Bengal's SSKM hospital on June 24 performed a complex brain surgery and saved the life of five-year-old Ajijur Rahman, who had accidentally fallen on a knife while playing at his house, and the knife got stuck at the base of his skull, rupturing an artery.

Murshidabad:West Bengal’s Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER), popularly known as SSKM, on June 24 performed a complex brain surgery involving a five-year-old child from Murshidabad district.

Ajijur Rahman, accidentally fell on a knife while playing at his house. The knife got stuck at the base of the child's skull, also known as carnial base, rupturing an artery.

Rahman was rushed to the Murshidabad Medical College Hospital, but was referred to the SSKM considering the complexity of the accident.

Doctors from the Neurosciences department of SSKM performed a complex surgery and saved the little boy.

Explaining the complexity of the surgery, Dr. Shubhendu Mahapatra, who performed the operation, said, "The child was brought to us in a critical condition. Had the surgery gone wrong, he risked being paralysed either partially or fully."

Rahman has recovered from the surgery and has also been released from the hospital..
