Kolkata: Eight months after Trinamool heavyweight Anubrata Mondal was arrested, his daughter Sukanya also met the same fate. She was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in New Delhi on Wednesday evening.
The Central Investigation Agency has traced a large amount of unaccounted property in the name of Sukanya, who is a primary school teacher. They suspect that she might be involved in cow smuggling. Her father Anubrata Mondal has been arrested by the CBI in a similar case. Mondal was again arrested by the ED and is lodged at Tihar Jail in Delhi. Anubrata's former bodyguard Saigal Hossain was also arrested in the case. He was first interrogated and then arrested.
The accountant of Birbhum District Trinamool Congress president, Manish Kothari, is also at a correctional facility in connection with the cow smuggling case.
Summons, which were issued several times, had not been aptly responded by Sukanya, who avoided appearances. At last, she was arrested.
Before the April 23 assembly elections in Birbhum, the Income Tax Department sent notices to Birbhum Trinamool district president Anubrata Mondal and his four relatives.
Soon after, the CBI sent notice to him in cattle smuggling case on April 26. There is a cow market in Sukhbazar of Ilambazar in Birbhum, the biggest cow trading place in South Bengal. Allegedly, the cattle smuggling business was flourishing from there across the border to Bangladesh. Enamul Haque was arrested by the CBI after the investigation into this cattle smuggling case. From there, the officers of the Central investigation agency got the evidence in this case.
Anubrata Mondal was named in many post-poll violence cases and an arrest warrant was issued against him. The Trinamool leader approached the Calcutta High Court on February 2, 2022, and filed an application seeking protection.
The CBI was investigating the cattle smuggling case even before the state assembly elections in 2021. And before the assembly elections, BJP leaders came to Birbhum and raised questions about the huge property of Anubrata Mandal.
Soon the Income Tax Department first sent a notice about the unaccounted assets. Then CBI summons in cattle smuggling case followed ahead of Birbhum elections.
Here's a timeline of events:
On February 14, 2022: CBI summons Anubrata Mondal again in a cattle smuggling case. He was summoned to the Nizam Palace, the CBI headquarters in Kolkata. But the leader skipped appearance.
On February 25: CBI summons Anubrata again for questioning in the cattle smuggling case probe. He again evaded the central agency summon.
On March 10: Anubrata approached the Calcutta High Court. March 15: CBI summoned Anubrata again in the cattle smuggling case. This time too, Mondal preferred to bunk.
On March 29: Calcutta High Court makes it clear that Anubrata Mondal has to face CBI. After that, the CBI began to interrogate him.
On April 6: Anubrata Mondal left his Chinar Park residence while attending the CBI summons. Then his car entered SSKM straight after he felt sick.
On April 7: CBI officials themselves visited SSKM Super's house to take Anubrata's health report.
On April 23: CBI summons Anubrata yet again. The Trinamool heavyweight again avoided appearance.
On May 19: Anubrata reaches Nizam Palace for the first time.
On May 24: CBI summons him again in a cattle smuggling case and the Trinamool leader skipped the call.
On June 9: Saigal Hossain, the bodyguard of Anubrata Mondal, was arrested in a cow smuggling case.
On August 5: Anubrata was summoned to the Nizam's Palace again in a cow smuggling case, but Anubrata avoided the appearance
On August 9: CBI again summons Anubrata but he didn't go.
On August 10: Anubrata approached the Supreme Court to seek protection.
On August 11: Anubrata Mondal was arrested by the CBI from his house in Neechupatti, Bolpur.
On August 18: CBI summoned Anubrata's daughter Sukanya Mondal.
On August 24: Anubrata Mondal initially went to jail custody. he was lodged in a Special Correctional Facility, Asansol.
On August 25: ED requested to take Anubrata and Saigal Hussain to Delhi for questioning.
On September 16: CBI interrogates Sukanya Mondal, daughter of Anubrata Mondal.
On September 23: Sukanya asked to appear again. But she avoided attendance.
On October 7: Anubrata Mondal's bodyguard Saigal Hossain was arrested by Enforcement Directorate or ED.
On October 15: CBI summoned Sukanya Mondal again.
On November 5: Anubrata's bodyguard Saigal Hossain was taken to Delhi.
On November 17: Anubrata was arrested by ED.
On December 20: Dubrajpur police station arrested Anubrata in a threat case.
On March 7, 2023: ED took Anubrata to Delhi.
On March 15: Sukanya Mondal was summoned again, but she did not appear.
On March 18: ED summoned Sukanya Mondal again.
On March 24: Anubrata Mandal's accountant Manish Kothari was arrested by ED.
On April 8: ED summoned Sukanya Mondal again. This time also, she skipped attendance.
On April 26: Sukanya Mondal was finally arrested after failing to answer questions asked by the ED sleuths.
