West Bengal: 1 dead, 50 hurt in lightning strike during TMC's public meeting

Bankura:One Trinamool Congress worker died and 50 other party supporters were injured after being struck by lightning while they going to attend a party meeting in Bankura on Sunday. TMC men gathered to attend the meeting of Trinamool spokesperson Debanshu Bhattacharya in the Ashinpur area.

The deceased was identified as Samad Mallik. Party sources said Bhattacharya was supposed to go to Ashinpur under the Indas police station area of the district. Just before the start of the meeting, heavy rain followed by lightning occurred. Trinamool workers ran for cover and many took shelter under a banyan tree next to the venue.

According to police sources, the lightning struck the tree just at the time scores of Trinamool Congress workers took shelter under the tree. Samad Mallik,42, who hailed from Batania village, also came to attend the meeting and was struck by the lightning. After Samad was hurt by the lightning, he was soon rushed to Indas Block Primary Health Center where doctors declared him dead on arrival. According to hospital sources, the number of injured in the incident is more than 50. Out of the total number, seven Trinamool Congress are said to be in critical condition. They have been shifted to Burdwan Medical College for advanced treatment.

The incident has sent a shockwave among party workers in the area. Debanshu Bhattacharya, who had to cancel the meeting, expressed shock over the incident. He condoled the death of Samad and said he'll go to the hospital to see the injured workers.
