Uttarakhand: Four killed in landslide, search operation underway

Tehri(Uttarakhand):At least four persons, including two women and a four-month-old baby, died after being hit by a landslide in Chamba in Uttarakhand's Tehri district on Monday, official sources said. The SDRF rushed to the spot and started a search and rescue operation at the site, they said.

Tehri Senior Superintendent of Police Navneet Singh Bhullar said four bodies have been recovered so far and search is underway for another missing person. Earlier in the day, the bodies of two women and a child were found in a car which was buried under the landslide rubble. The deceased were identified as Poonam Khanduri, her four-month-old son and her sister-in-law Saraswati Devi. Later, the body of a 30-year-old man identified as Prakash was also pulled out of the debris.

District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit, SSP Bhullar and Chief Development Officer Manish Kumar are at the spot, police officials said. Meanwhile, all schools from class 1 to 12 and anganwadi kendras in Bhilangana, Chamba, Narendra Nagar and Jaunpur in Tehri district have been closed on Tuesday on the orders of the DM in view of the MeT department's heavy rain alert for various parts of the state over the next two days.

Since Monday morning, landslides occurred in several places in the state including Dehradun. Due to this, a pillar of the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple complex collapsed. However, no casualties have been reported yet.

Meanwhile, another landslide occurred near Rishikesh in the morning. The incident took place in the Laxmanjhula police station area of Pauri district. The traffic was halted for a long time due to the landslide.

Earlier, five people were buried under the debris that came with the landslide at the Jogiana Mohanchatti area under the Yamkeshwar block of Pauri district in Uttarakhand. According to the SDRF, the bodies of all five people buried under the debris were recovered. The deceased were identified as Kamal Verma (36), Nisha Verma (32), Vishal (24), Nishant Verma (18) and Nirmit Verma, all residents of district Kurukshetra, Haryana. (With PTI Inputs)
